Page 6/The Battalion/Thursday, October 6,1983 Indictments sought in civil rights case United Press International SAN ANTONIO — A civil rights group is seeking indict ments against several Texas De partment of Corrections offi cials for the alleged beatings of inmates in the state prison sys- tem, a spokesman said Wednesday. Ken Pallend of Alternatives to Imprisonment said San Anto nio attorney Ruben Sandoval will serve as a special prosecutor to try to obtain indictments against the TDC officials in Bra zoria County in the next two weeks. Sandoval will present evi dence against David Christian, warden at the Darrington Unit at Rosharon, and other TDC officials, who allegedly partici pated in the Sept. 16 beating of inmate Frank Cerventes. Cerventes, who had to be admitted to the intensive care unit at John Sealy Hospital, was handcuffed when he was beaten by Christian and four TDC guards, Pallend said. Christian was unavailable for comment. Sandoval is seeking the cooperation of the Brazoria -County district attorney’s office in obtaining the indictments, but said he will act without it if neces sary. Casa Chavultepec 1315 So. United Press International HOUSTON — Former San Jacinto County Sheriff James “Humpy” Parker, convicted of water-torturing prisoners to ex tract confessions, surrendered to federal marshals Wednesday on other charges. Parker, 47, went before a fed eral magistrate and was charged with conspiring to falsely arrest motorists near Coldspring to take money from them.
