Kilgore investigation
AUSTIN — A poll conducted
among members of the Texas
Federation of Teachers shows
former Vice President Walter
Mondale as the strongest Demo
cratic presidential candidate,
the union said Thursday.
TFT president John Cole
said 1,500 of TFT’s 15,000
members in Texas, participated
in the poll conducted in August.
The poll pitted six Democra-
Paul tic contenders, Sen. Alan Cran-
oy ram un meyer ston of California Sen j ohn
Glenn of Ohio, Sen. Ernest Holl-
ings of South Carolina, Sen.
Gary Hart of Colorado, civil
rights leader Jesse Jackson and
Mondale, against Reagan.
The poll asked respondents:
“Suppose the 1984 presidential
election were held today, which
of these candidates would you
vote for?”
Mondale received the highest
percentage of support, 53.1 per
cent, while Hollings got the
lowest percentage — 28.7 per
cent. Reagan got his highest per
centage, 31.8 percent, when
paired against Jackson, who got
36 percent.
“These results are very in
teresting,” said Cole. “They
show that Reagan will have real
problems winning teachers’
votes in 1984.
“Unless he can do something
very significant, very soon. Pres
ident Reagan will likely lose the
Texas teacher vote to almost any
candidate who runs against
him,” he said.
Cole said Mondale’s strength
was not surprising since he has
name recognition and has ac
tively courted the teacher vote.
But he said Glenn’s “relatively
poor showing” was a surprise.
“Perhaps Glenn has relied too
much on his reputation as an
astronaut rather than engaging
in the grass roots politics that
form such an important part of a
political campaign,” he said.

The investigation has been
handled by city police, the sher
iffs department in Gregg Coun
ty, where the restaurant is lo
cated, and deputies in Rusk
County, where the bodies were
found.
“Having a coordinator will
maintain a cohesiveness be
tween the two investigations,”
Headen said, “even more closely
than we have been coordinating
it.”
A psychic who Wednesday vi
sited the site where the bodies
were found was not able to offer
any leads, officials said, but she
was expected to try again, poss
ibly with a aid of a colleague.
“Anything is worth a try,” said
Rusk County sheriffs depart
ment spokesman Doyle Williams
of the decision by Sheriff Mike
Strong to call in the psychic.
