Continental pilots considering strike United Press International HOUSTON — Continental Airlines pilots union leaders met Wednesday to consider trying to shut Continental down with a strike because of pay cuts and workload increases im plemented in a bankruptcy reor ganization. Gary Thomas — spokesman for the 18-member Continental master executive committee of the Air Line Pilot’s Association, some of whom came from as far away as Guam — said a decision might not be announced before Thursday. On Thursday, representa tives of all 46 airline units of ALPA were scheduled to meet in Houston to consider industry wide action. “We’re going to talk about a withdrawal of service,” Thomas said, using ALPA’s code phrase for strike. “We’ve got to try to find a way to stop this and at the same time save our airline.” Thomas said there was some concern whether the union could make a strike stick. Despite angry words from un ions, Continental since Tuesday has been flying a much-reduced schedule with a third of the 1,420 pilots on payroll when Continental suspenaed domes tic service and filed for bank ruptcy Saturday. “It could be tough,” Thomas said. “It depends on what these guys who are working do.” The mood of the 200 people at the closed-door meeting, par ticipating and observing, was angry. At least two pilots in uni form — obviously working and engaging in union activityhat the same time — were present. Pete Dennis, 47, a Continen tal pilot for 18 years, expressed the general mood of the union, which claims Continental wants to “bust” the union and has lied in claiming unions were unwill ing to make changes to cut financial losses. “It’s ironic that one con® shot down an airliner audit whole world turned down. One man is shoo® down a whole industry andi* body seems to give a damn,” nnis said. Continental since Tuese has been flying to 25 oftht cities it once served, runra 118 of its previous 508 fliji Spokesman Bruce Hicks said least one flight was 68 pete full Tuesday, but most fiji were less full. The International Ass® tion of Machinists and Aen pace Workers has beenonstii against Continental since k 13, well before the bankrupt, but has not been meetingpuhs ly with angry flight attendu and pilots.
