Lecture series opens today
by Kelly Miller
Battalion Reporter
Dr. Ralph Landau will give
the year’s First University Lec
ture on “Technology, Econo
mics, and Public Policy” at 2 p.m.
today in Rudder Forum.
Landau, a chemical engineer,
has been recognized by The
Economist magazine as “one of
America’s most successful en
trepreneurs.” He holds nearly
50 patents on technical products
and has published more than 90
papers and two books.
The Philadelphia native
graduated from the University
of Pennsylvania in 1937 with a
bachelor of science degree and
in 1941 from Massachusetts In
stitute of Technology as a doctor
of science, both in chemical en
gineering.
Landau has lectured at sever-
al major universities and
accumulated a lengthy list of
awards and honors in the en
gineering field. Landau was rec
ognized as an “eminent chemical
engineer” in 1983 by the Amer
ican Institute of Chemical En
gineers.
Landau is the first of four
lecturers on the University Lec
ture Series’ agenda for the 1983-
84 school year. His speech is
sponsored by the College of En
gineering.
The University Lecture
Series committee is comprised
of one faculty member from
each college and one from the
Sterling C. Evans Library. Two
students — and sometimes three
— also serve on the committee.
Dr. Donald McDonald, in
terim deputy provost for en
gineering and a member of the
University Lecture Series com
mittee, said it sponsors four lec
tures every year. The first three
are sponsored by various col
leges on campus and the last one
ponsored by the Texas A&M faculty.
“ I he colleges sponsoring lec
tures are chosen in alphabetical
order,” McDonald said. The
College of Engineering, College
of Geosciences and College of
Liberal Arts will have guest
speakers this year.
The lecture is free to the
public.

Class required
to cut bonfire
by Karen Wallace
Battalion Reporter
Anyone planning to cut bon
fire must attend one of the safe
ty classes at 4 p.m. or 7 p.m. on
Sept. 26, 27, or 28, head civilian
and senior coordinator of bon
fire Mark Hackfeld says.
Hackfeld explained that the
classes are one of the safety mea
sures outlined in a safety report
written this fall by Corps of
Cadets bonfire coordinator
Albert Eby.
The only way to receive a
bonfire cutting card is to attend
one of the classes, he said.
“I don’t care how many times
ou’ve been out to cut bonfire,”
e said. “This year you need to
come to the class to receive
another card.”
The classes include demon
strations on ax safety and chain
saw usage, as well as how to cut
down trees and limbs.
“A lot of it covers ax safety
because that’s the main tool we
use,” Hackfeld said.
The free classes, held at The
Grove, will last 30 minutes and
cover all aspects of bonfire safe
ty, Hackfeld said.
In compiling the safety re
port, Eby worked with safety en
gineer Dr. Gary Nelson, who
observed the cutting site and
outlined the risks, Hackfeld
said.
“He pointed out the high risk
i:
areas, and we eliminated thw
Hackfeld said. For examplt
people can no longer ridetoik
site on the back of flatbed or!'
wheeler trucks.
“It was always a big deal
ride on the trucks,” Hackftl
said. “But it was a high risk, soi
was eliminated.”
Safety measures takenonik
lower risk problems also helps
reduce the number of accidei!
last year, Hackfeld said.
“At bonfire last year,
were 53.7 percent less accide®
than the previous year,”hesai
Much of that has to do nit
the safety classes, Hackfeld sak
and this year there shouldbei
even bigger decrease in arc
dents.
Along with safety measure
the report covers the organis
tion and supervision ofbonfut
Hackfeld said.
“There is pretty extensive*
pervision over the dorms,” k
said. A dorm that brings40toS
people out to cut should have*
least five people supervisiii
them at all times, he said.
“Most of the accidents cow
from people just play
around,” Hackfeld said.
About 3,500 people ares
pected to be cutting forbonf®
this year, he said.
“We’re looking for a
turnout this year and we wait
everything to be safe,” he sail
