The man, identified by police
as Scott Craig, 31, fired a bullet

Woodland Memorial Hospital.
No one was injured.
The captives escaped from
the facility’s back door about
2:30 p.m. and the suspect was
arrested shortly before 3 p.m.,
about two hours after the inci
dent started.

“At one point, we believed he
was concerned about a stomach
cancer we believe he has,” Smith
said. “On another occasion, we
were led to believe he’s upset ab
out some medical treatment he

Smith said a psychiatrist
talked with Craig on the tele
phone. Witnesses said Craig
walked into the hospital’s lobby
shortly before 1 p.m., carrying a
double-barreled shotgun and
shouted he wanted to talk to

ia and fired a single shot into the
ceiling.
Smith said about 16 people,
mostly hospital staff, were eat
ing lunch in the cafeteria. A few
scattered after the shot was
fired.
Police evacuated hospital

The seven-man, five-woman
jury, after listening to testimony
about brutal attacks from 30 sex
abuse victims and to conflicting
evaluations of Jackson from
seven mental health experts,
needed nine hours to reach its
verdict.
From the first day of jury
selection Jackson’s attorneys
conceded their client had com
mitted the acts that drew him the
charges but said he acted while
legally insane — unable to re
frain from his wrongful acts.
The verdict means the ex-
Army major and father of two
teenage daughters faces a possi
ble jail sentence of 1,370 years.
The panel met for more than
six hours Wednesday without
reaching a verdict.
Some 74 witnesses testified
and more than 80 pieces of phy
sical evidence — mostly ropes
and pantyhose — were intro
duced during Jackson’s 2Tday
trial.
Jackson was charged with 21
rapes, 29 aggravateef burglaries,
three attempted rapes, two
counts of kidnap, four counts of
gross sexual imposition and one
count of possession of burglary
tools.
For each count, jurors were
instructed to fill out a verdict
ballot of guilty, innocent by
reason of insanity or innocent.
Defense attorneys have said
Jackson admitted to the rapes —
but was helpless to stop himself.

HONOLULU — Defense
Secretary Caspar Weinberger
began a two-week trip to Asia
Thursday that will include high-
level talks in Peking and could
lead to purchases of U.S. high
technology equipment to mod
ernize China’s military.
Weinberger’s plane sche
duled an overnight layover in
Honolulu before continuing on
to Tokyo and Peking. After Pek
ing, the key stop of his tour, the
secretary will return on an
around-the-world course via
Hong Kong, Pakistan and Italy.
It will be Weinberger’s first
visit to China, and Pentagon
officials said the talks will center
on selling top U.S. technology to
help China bring up to date its
military, the least modern of any
major armed force in the world.
Weinberger will discuss tech
nology transfer “and how it can
contribute responsibly to the
modernization of China’s milit
ary,” one Pentagon official said.
Weinberger will confer in
Peking with his Chinese coun
terpart, Defense Minister Zhang
Aiping, in an atmosphere of
strained U.S. relations with the
Soviet Union following the
Soviet destruction of a Korean
airliner three weeks ago.
Before taking off from
Andrews Air Force Base outside
Washington, Weinberger con
ferred with Chinese Ambassa
dor Zhang Wenjin at the airfield
and told reporters he is “very
much looking forward to build
ing on and increasing the grow
ing strength of U.S.-China rela
tions.”
Weinberger is accompanied
by the Pentagon’s general coun
sel, William Taft, who is familiar
with U.S. guidelines on technol
ogy sharing, and James Ade,
one of the Defense Depart
ment’s chief research and en
gineering experts.
In preparing for the visit, the
Pentagon conducted an inten
sive review on liberalizing U.S.
strictures on exporting such
high technology equipment to
Peking alls computers, semicon
ductors and the machinery to
manufacture them — all of
which can be applied to military
use.

Instead of a bell, a siren will
call the students to their battle
stations in the room whose sand
bagged walls are draped with
military parachutes. The sound
track of an aerial dogfight will be
played on the intercom.
“Then it will be dogfight
time,” Kilpatrick said. “At the
computers, it will be a fight to
the death.”
The war game is part of a
program Kilpatrick says he
dreamed up after only 12 of the
school’s 550 students showed up
to take the Scholastic Aptitude
Test last spring. The test is used
by colleges to evaluate appli
cants.
Kilpatrick said he hopes dres
sing students up like fighter

pilots and getting them to work
with computers programmed to
help them take the SATs will
goad them into taking the test
this fall.
Already, 63 volunteers have
been divided in nine squadrons.
They will compete against one
another to answer computer
questions similar to those on the
SATs.
The squadron that answers
the most questions correctly in
the shortest amount of time will
stay aloft in the computer room
in a cardboard plane.
Kilpatrick said the first com
bat drill in the computer room
will be made more realistic by
the addition of a few relics.
The students can’t wait.
“I have all kinds of kids bug
ging me all the time about when
we’re going to start,” Kilpatrick
said. “I tell them we’re starting
any day now. All we’re really
waiting for is the computer
programs we need.”
