Bruch, who was convicted with his wife, Connie Sue Bruch, in Bell County fot the Sept. 11, 1979 death of Richard T. Bruch Jr time. The appellate court said testi- by an appeals court The 3rd Court of Appeals let stand the conviction of Richard According to testimony, the child either died of a massive single blow to the head or a series of blows over a period of mony and photographs intro duced at the trial showed the baby’s body was a “buffeted mass of bruises.” Although Bruch’s wife was accused of delivering the fatal blow, Bruch was convicted under the theory of a conspiracy to injure the child. Bruch admitted he struck the child with his hands, a wooden paddle and a wooden spoon be cause the baby was “head strong and self-willed.” One of the Bi uchs' neighbors testified she overheard beatings administered by Mrs. Bruch, some lasting as long as 45 mi nules. The firm, a subsidiary of Scripps-Howard Co., also owns the citv’s only morning news paper, The Commercial Appeal. Some of the 95 full-time staf fers of the Press-Scimitar will be given the opportunity to go to work for the Commercial Appeal, which will expand its news coverage. “This is not a sudden move forced upon us by economu hard times,” said Joseph R. Wil liams, general manager of Mem phis Publishing. “Our company is financially healthy and confi dent about the future. This is, rat he t a decision based on a con tinuing decline in cin uhtion and leadership which we have been unable to reverse despite considerable effort by a dedi cated group of employees and on research conducted over the past eight years.” Williams noted in a statement published in Wednesday edi tions of the afternoon newspap er, which will be 103 years old the month it closes, that circula tion fell from 127,000 in 1973 to 80,000 a decade later, reflecting a national trend in readers’ habits away from afternoon newspapers.
