SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah —
Fearing an extended walkout
might cancel dinner, the- Davis
family bargaining committee —
Jamie, Missy and Steven — sat
down at the dining table with their
striking mother and agreed to do
all their chores, on time and with a
smile.
Susan Davis, the wife of South
Salt Lake Mayor James W. Davis,
went on strike against her children
last Thursday and demanded the
kids help more around the house
and display a more positive atti
tude.
After a three-day stalemate, the
two sides worked out an agree
ment Sunday and the children
each signed contracts at the family
bargaining table in the dining
room.
The mayor acted as mediator
and witnessed the signing of the
contract.
The contracts read:
“I agree to the following terms:
to do jobs the first time I am asked;
to be more cooperative and help
ful; and to have a happy, positive
attitude.
“I understand if these terms are
violated I will voluntarily submit
myself to any of the following con
ditions: to do extra job assign
ments, to take time out to think
about my actions, and the confis
cation of any personal property
that is left in an inappropriate
place.
T will earn my property back by
doing extra jobs.'

opportunity to practice skills they
have been taught.
"We give them as much oppor
tunity as possible to become out
door leaders, instructor Rena
Koesler says.
The training program lasts from
October to May, and ends with a
week-long canoe trip.
After the summer wilderness
expedition at Wind Rivers, Wyo.,
W. I.L. D. program members are
eligible for certification, which the
program enphasizes, Koesler
says. Members are eligible to be
certified as outdoor leaders,
enabling them to lead outdoor ex
peditions in the future, she says.
Texas A&M is one of many univer
sities involved in the National
Standard Program for leadership
certification through the Wilder
ness Education Association.
Thirteen W.I.L.D. program
members and two instructors
made their first trip to Wind Riv
ers this summer. The group
learned rope techniques, flow to
read topographical maps and how
to ration food. They also learned to
identify edible plants and caught
and cooked their own fish.
The members went on a “solo”
in which they spent 24 hours by
themselves. They got a first-hand
look at emergency evacuation
techniques when injured hikers
from another group were given
first aid and prepared to be taken
to a camp 15 miles away.
Members were evaluated for
certification after the trip. Com
munication skills, confidence,
peer evaluations and technique
were taken into account. Koesler
says a good leader knows his limi
tations.
“Know what you know, and
know what you don’t know, is
their motto, she says.
The W.I.L.D. program is open
to anyone who is interested, re
gardless of outdoor experience.
“We start from square one,’
Koesler says. “We start everyom
at the same level.” Prospective
members are interviewed on the
basis of enthusiasm to be in the
outdoors and a desire to learn, she
says.
The W.I.L.D. outdeiors preig
ram will have its first meeting at ’
p.m. Wednesday in 401 Rudder
