Page 6/The Battalion/Tuesday, August 30, 1983 Death of U.S. Marines called tragic by president United Press International SANTA BARBARA — Presi dent Reagan expressed “pro found sorrow” over the death of two U.S. Marines during fight ing in Lebanon Monday, as events in the Middle East con tinued to interrupt the final week of his California vacation. White House spokesman Larry Speakes said Reagan was awakened at 4:55 a.m. EDT by a telephone call from National Security Adviser William Clark who notified him of the deaths that occurred in fighting be tween Lebanese troops and Shiite Moslems near the Beirut airport. “The president expressed profound sorrow and termed the deaths tragic,” he said. Speakes said Reagan also “praised the courage of the U.S. Marines for their role as peace keepers.” Reagan was expected «to call the families of the dead Marines. An administration official said eight other Marines were wounded, some of whom re turned to action a short time la ter. The Marines responded to the attack with artillery and fire from helicopter gunships and the fighting was reported to have ended several hours later. Officials also said three bri gades of Lebanese troops were ordered into the fighting. On Sunday, members of the U.S. contingent of the multinational peace-keeping force carne under attack from Shiite gun ners and returned fire for the first time. To date, three Marines in the peace-keeping force have been killed in Lebanon, the first while defusing bombs last fall. The latest deaths, the first in combat, came in the midst of discussions on the future of the multination al force in light of lsraeli plans for a partial pullback from the Shouf mountains, the site of re cent sectarian fighting. The fighting in Lebanon also came against a backdrop of un certainty caused by Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin’s announced intention to resign. The announcement by Begin, who Monday postponed a “final decision” until today, and the escalation of the fighting in Lebanon occurred at what Speakes described Sunday as “an important and critical time in the peace process.” Reagan has been kept informed of the developments while remaining in seclusion at his 688-acre mountaintop ranch.
