Program helps all majors
Effective writing stressed
by Gwendolyn Hattaway
Battalion Reporter
Students who want to develop
their communication skills can
enroll in a writing specialization
program through the English
department.
“It’s something like a minor
in writing,” Dr. David H. Ste
wart, head of the English de
partment, said.
The program consists of six
classes designed to help students
of any major write and speak
effectively. The program is not a
part of any degree plan, but a
certificate is awarded for the ex
tra 18 hours. The student must
make at least a B in every class,
Stewart said.
The certificate looks good to
prospective employers, he said.
“You never know in what way
it will help a student,” he said.
“Most students mention it right
along with their diploma on
their transcript because it
sounds better when asking for a
job.”
The six courses are specified
by the English department and
include four core courses and
two satellite courses, totaling 18
hours. The four core courses

The two satellite courses are
related to the student’s major
but are not required to be
courses from the English de
partment. However, Stewart
said, the courses must be
approved through the depart
ment. A significant portion of
the satellite course grade must
be based on writing, he said.

Area woman starts
modeling agency
by Jill Slayman
Battalion Reporter
“Start a modeling agency
here,” a friend jokingly sug
gested. But instead of laughing,
Joni Hennigan got to work and
created the J. CHAN Model
Connection.
J. GHAN Model Connection
is now available in College Sta
tion for men and women with
prior modeling experience as
well as persons with no experi
ence who would like to try it.
While Hennigan can’t
guarantee jobs for the models
through J. GHAN, she does pro
vide the models to merchants
for fashion shows and advertise
ments. That’s why she calls the
business a connection rather
than an agency. The merchants
cover the charges of the shows,
advertisements and the models.
Basically, J. GHAN is a hobby
for Hennigan since her fees only
cover her costs.
Hennigan has provided mod
els for fashion shows sponsored
by Dillard’s, Department Store
and Windsport International.
She will be providing models
and pictures for a new hot-tub
business and is discussing plans
for a photo lay-out with Dil
lard’s.
Hennigan says that five
businesses are waiting for her to
find models for fashion shows of
their own.
With the connection, Henni
gan says, she wants to give peo
ple the opportunity to become
models.
Hennigan says models are
too stereotyped and that it isn’t
necessary to be tall and thin.
“Everybody has something to
offer,” she says. “I want to give
the others a chance.”
J. GHAN models will be fea
tured in areas such as hair, eye,
hand, and fashion, Hennigan
says. In this way, someone who is
overweight, but has pretty hair
or eyes, can be used.
