TAMPA, Fla. — A man with a
history of mental problems, de
scribed by his family as a “ticking
time bomb,” was in jail without
bond Tuesday on charges of tor
ching two people with gasoline
in a supermarket rampage.
John “Billy” Ferry, 30, was
taken to his first appearance be
fore a judge Monday and
assigned a public defender,
court officials said.
He was arrested Sunday and
charged with first-degree mur
der and arson. He was being
held without bond in Hillsbor
ough County Jail.
Ferry is accused of splashing
customers with gasoline in a
Winn-Dixie Supermarket Satur
day night and setting them on
fire. One person died from
burns at the scene and a second
died the next day. Sixteen other
people were injured, including
five who remained in critical
condition Tampa General Hos
pital.
Relatives of Fetry said he was
a “ticking time bomb” who often
wrote bizarre messages on walls
of buildings, preached uncon
trollably about the dangers of
asbestos and recently threw acid
on their cars.

LOS ANGELES — Bermuda
grass, juniper and tumbleweed
are bad enough, but hay fever
sufferers in the West now have
to contend with a newly disco
vered irritant pollen from
flourishing marijuana planta
tions.
Dr. Geraldine Freeman of
Tucson, Ariz., said that mari
juana, “a plant prevelant in the
Southwest,” has a highly allerge
nic pollen. The text of her paper
is printed in the June issue of
The Western Journal of Medi
cine.
The problem for hay fever
sufferers jumped a hundred
fold when many immigrants
from the East and Midwest de
cided to dress up their bleak de
sert communities with mulberry
trees.
Now allergists are finding
that illegally grown marijuana
S lants — a relative of the mul-
erry, elm, hop, and stinging
nettle — have joined the list of
allergy irritants. Dr. Freeman
said.
She tested 129 patients rang
ing in age from 6 to 66 years with
allergens including tobacco leaf
and marijuana — Cannabis
sativa.

helps her make the mark.
“If I miss, Cinder goes and
gets them and brings them back
so I can throw them again,” said
Michaels, 30, who lost all sight in
her left eye nine years ago, and
sees partial images with her
right eye.
“I can tell by how they sound
if they hit good,” she said. Cin
der has become so good at her
job, Michaels said “Someday I’m
going to send her without me —
just let her do all the papers.”
Cinder, trained by Pilot Dogs
of Columbus, Ohio, became part
of Michaels’ life about 18
months ago.
Michaels had to use a cane
before that.
“I really hated it,” she said. “I
felt really handicapped. If you
feel confident, you are confi
dent. That feeling wasn’t there
when I had the cane. People
could feel the confusion.”
