‘Rock-out’ against leukemia
Crestview Retirement Com
munity of Bryan is inviting
everyone to “rock out” this
Saturday during the Rock
N’Roll Jamboree for The
Leukemia Society of America,
Inc.
There will not be any electric
guitars or drums, but there will
be plenty of rocking chairs for
all participants of the “rock-a-
thon” to raise money for the
Houston chapter of the society.
The jamboree will be held
Saturday at Post Oak Mall from
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
“Our goal is to have 100 parti
cipants,” says Janet deGuzman,
activity director at Crestview.
She adds that rockers of all ages
are invited to participate in the
charity fund raiser.
DeGuzman says Crestview is
seeking volunteer help as well as
participants for the jamboree.
Volunteers are needed to help
solicit donations for support,
materials and sponsors for
Crestview residents who are
planning to rock.
Sponsor sheets for jamboree
rockers are available at all of the
local McDonald’s restaurants,
she says.
The jamboree is part of a net
work of similar events held
annually in many communities
across the nation. Organized by
the American Health Care Asso
ciation in 1977, the jamboree
was created to raise money for
several charities. Last year, a tot
al of $1,954,000 was raised by
3,500 jamborees.
This is the first year that
Crestview has participated in the
jamboree. DeGuzman adds that
along with raising money for a
chanty, Crestview decided to
host the jamboree because it
would be fun for the residents
and the local community.
Local stars to milk at mall
by Angel Stokes
Battalion Staff
Post Oak Mall might look as if
it’s a dairy Saturday, but it’s only
sponsoring its second annual
charity cow milking contest.
Forty milkers from both
Bryan and College Station — in
cluding mayors, city council
members, media representa
tives, policemen and firemen —
will be at the Mall to raise money
for Brazos County Crime Stop
pers.
Each of the milkers will re
ceive a trophy, but the one to get
the most milk during a three mi
nute time limit will win the
grand prize — dinner for two at
the Cow Hop in Northgate.
All money raised through
pledges and donations will be
given to Crime Stoppers, said
Maria Polites, marketing dire
ctor and assistant manager of
the Mall. All advertising and
other expenses have been paid
by the Mall.
The Texas A&M Dairy Cen
ter will furnish the 10 or 12 milk
ing cows for the contest. The
milking will begin at 2 p.m.
Polites said that she came up
with the idea as a fund raiser last
year because June is dairy
month. It was more successful
than anticipated, so the Mall de
cided to try it again, she said.
At last year’s contest, almost
$3,000 was raised for the A&M
Consolidated High School
choir’s trip to Austria, she said.
People can make pledges or
donations Saturday.
