COLUMBIA, S.C.— Dairy
farmers are awaiting a decision
from U.S. District Judge Matth
ew Perry on whether the gov
ernment can charge them 50
cents for every 100 pounds of
milk they sell.
The assessment, supported
by U.S. Agriculture Secretary
John Block, is designed to bols
ter the federal milk-price sup
port program.
The program buys surplus
milk from farmers who produce
more than they can market, pro
tecting dairymen w'ho would
otherwise have to take losses on
the excess.
The South Carolina Agricul
ture Commission has sued the
government in an attempt to
block collection of the sur
charge, claiming it is unfair to
farmers in South Carolina and
other states who do not produce
more milk than they can sell.
Perry issued an order May 5

about 102 pounds, hazel eyes
and tatoos on her thighs and
right breast — was buried in a
pauper’s grave in Dallas last
week. Two men arrested in con
