Rated R. See review, this * Rocky Horror Picture Snow: Bdnight. The now classic Bdnight cult movie is still here. The music is great; b tin plot is campy at its finest; and the crowds are Bually rowdy. Hasn’t everyone seen it by now? Aren’t we ready for a new midnight movie? Only Franknfurter knows for sure. Rated R. Only one theater is open. Plitt is remodeling and Will open with three thea ters on May 27. h Manor East led g» v( 1 onfi lemi dratE Man From Snowy Jiver; this one before it ‘“leaves. Even if you don’t like Westerns or the usual “boy grows to manhood” stories, this is still an enter taining movie. You’ve seen lire plot before: young man from the wrong side of the tracks falls in love with a rich man’s daughter and must prove he is worthy of her. It may not be a new idea, but this movie does it is as well as it can be done. Director George Miller did an excel lent job of capturing the beauty and ruggedness of the Australian country side, as well as the wild horses. Kirk Douglas is at his best in dual roles as twin brothers and Tom Burlin- son, the star, makes the story believable and inspir ing. The story, trite as it may be, will melt even the hardest of hearts. Rated PG. Cheech and Chong’s Still Smokin Cheech and Chong’s latest cinematic effort. The usual marijuana jokes and such. If you like their previous films, you’ll probably like this picture and if you don’t you probably won’t find this amusing. Rated R. Sophie’s Choice: Playing through Tuesday, May 17. Meryl Streep won an academy award for her C erformance as the eroine in this adaptation of William Styron’s novel — and she deserved it. Though the plot gets te dious at times and occa sionally tries the viewer’s patience, the movie is worth seeing just for Streep, who plays a Nazi concentration camp victim and Polish emigre to the United States in post- World War II New York. She struggles to maintain, or regain, her sanity among a rather bizarre menage a trois. Streep is absolutely fantastic in this movie and confirms her self as one of the best. Rated R. Return of the Jedi. Starting Wednesday, May 18. Has it already been three years since the last one? My, how time flies when you’re waiting for the latest sequel in the “Star Wars” saga. This is episode VI, you’ll recall, and it should answer a lot of questions left un answered in the first seg ments. According to some leaked information, we will learn the identity of Luke’s father in this episode and will find out that Luke has a long lost sister. In addi tion, a whole new race of beings, called Ewoks, are introduced. This one boasts over 900 special effects (Empire had about 400.) That’s more than a video game has. Rated PG. Post Oak Blue Thunder: Roy Scheider stars as a police helicopter pilot assigned to test an ultra- sophisticated surveillance and attack helicopter, in this fast-paced adventure. The question is: will the good guys get the copter or will the bad guys get it? Also stars Candy Clark, Malcom McDowell and Warren Oates. Rated R. Doctor Detroit: Dan Aykroyd stars as a mild-mannered professor who gets mixed up in De troit’s underworld. Most reviews have said that Ayk royd blew it in this one. In short, not a very funny movie. You’ll get more laughs watching Saturday Night Live re-runs. Rated R. Flashdance: Being hailed as the next “Saturday Night Fever,” this movie has lots of flash, lots of dancing, but from most reviews, not much plot. Sort of like MTV on the big screen. Jennifer Beals stars as the welder- by-day, dancer-at-night. Rated R. Schulman Six Spaceh un ter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone: It’s about time someone thought to combine scien ce fiction and 3-D, but now they’ve done it. Peter Strauss stars as a starship captain who responds to the distress signal of a ship wrecked spacecraft and goes in search of its survi vors, three lovely space maidens. Rated PG. Tootsie: Dustin Hoffman stars in Sydney Pollack’s hilarious comedy about a down-and- out actor who dresses up as a woman to get a job on a soap opera. Rated PG. Lone Wolf McQuade: The macho, martial arts films at its worst (or is that best?). Chuck Norris and David Carradine star as two men who must have some good reason for beat ing up on each other. Rated PG. Gere gives 'Breathless' intensity, excitement by Gary Barker Battalion Staff “Oooh, baby, you leave me b-b-b-breathless!!” Like the punch and excite ment of a Jerry Lee Lewis song mixed with the intense acting of Richard Gere, “Breathless” leaves you just that. The original “Breathless,” written and directed by Jean- Luc Godard in 1959 and star ring Jean Seberg, was a minor classic in French New Wave Cinema. It contained some in novations that have since been adopted by many film makers: natural lighting, sound recorded on location, improvised dialogue, hand held cameras and fast-paced editing. The new “Breathless” doesn’t make any ground breaking contributions to the film industry, but it is a fasci nating and well-made Amer icanization of the original. “Breathless” tells the story of a small-time street punk, Jesse, who makes a living stealing cars and whatever else he can get his hands on; nothing serious, mind you, just petty crimes. However, on a rampage to Los Angeles he kills a cop. He feels bad. He didn’t mean to, really. But he doesn’t want to get caught either. Jesse seeks refuge in the company of Monica, a French student studying architecture in L.A. They met in Las Vegas when she was on vacation. She’s beautiful; he’s fascinat ing. He tries to talk her into running to Mexico with him. She’s tempted. “Breathless” fits into that American genre of the ro mance of the outlaw film. Its mood is reminiscent of films V Movie Review like “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Butch Cassidy and the Sund ance Kid,” “Badlands” and many of the early American gangster films, a genre to which the original “Breath less” paid tribute. All these films focus on that main char acter who lives fast, dies young and stays pretty. But wow, when he’s alive, he sure puts the rest of us to shame — or so these movies say. Gere is wonderful in the role of the die-young street E unk, similar to the character e played in “Looking for Mr. Goodbar” and “American Gigolo.” He stands tall, takes what he wants and has the persona of Elvis, Jerry Lee and James Dean all rolled into one. Valerie Kaprisky, a French actress in her first role, is ade quate in the role of the bril liant French student (Moni ca). Her acting is only fair, but her role mainly serves to echo the feelings of the audience. Like her, we are entranced by the thug who can steal cars without a second thought, quote Silver Surfer comic books and completely ignore the future. Monica is fascinated and enamored on one hand and frightened on the other. She has a future — he doesn’t. And yet he makes her feel more alive than she ever has. The movie’s writers’ L.M. Kit Carson and Jim McBride (who also directed) make the movie come alive in the char acter of Jesse. He lives with a fast-paced, reckless abandon that gives the film an intensity not found in many recent American movies. The nudity in the film is also a little more intense, but it doesn’t jump out of the screen; it fits the mood of the movie. In addition to its intensity, the writers also make wonder ful use of music, an old movie and even comic books to echo its themes. Those details cou pled with imaginative camera angles, fast-paced editing and a brilliant use of colors and landscapes make “Breathless” truly breathtaking. The cops are the only ones who don’t get a fair deal in this movie, but then they never do in this kind. Jesse has killed one of their own and they’re justifiably angry, yet McBride and Carson make the police appear to be useless ogres. However, if you’ve seen any of the other films in this genre you know how it ends. How else could it? Space Raiders The latest of the “Star Wars” clones. Something about a 10-year-old boy taken 10 million miles into space. If you can wait another week, the real “Star Wars” will be here. It will be worth the wait. Rated PG. Something Wicked This Way Comes: Walt Disney is responsible for this version of Ray Bradbury’s sci-fi classic. But don’t let that fool you, it’s scary when Mr. Dark visits Green Town. Stars Jason Robards. Rated PG. Porky’s: The original of the current wave of adolescent films. If you want to see a film ab out growing up, see “Man From Snowy River.” If you want to see a film about morons, see this one.
