HOUSTON — University of
Houston baseball player Rayner
Noble was named the Most
Valuable Player in the South
west Conference in voting by the
nine conference schools.
As a pitcher, Noble was 6-2
with 1.60 ERA and as an outfiel
der and designated hitter had a
.400 batting average.
Longtime Arkansas coach
Norm DeBriyn, whose team
finished second, was voted
coach of the year in the balloting
by publicists at the nine schools.
Conference batting cham
pion Todd Howey of Texas
Tech, who hit .432 as a fresh
man, was voted newcomer of the
year.
The Texas Longhorns placed
pitchers Calvin Schiraldi and
Kirk Killingsworth, and infiel
ders Jose Tolentino and Mike
Brumley on the 1983 All-SWC
team selected by the schools.
The Longhorns captured the
SWC championship with a 18-3
conference record and a 49-10
overall mark.
Unanimous selections were
Noble, Houston second base-

limited to balloting for players
on teams other than their own.
The Longhorns’ four selec

Texas A&M’s Bobby Beach
was named to the team as a de
signated hitter. Beach was the

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Tam
my Thomas became a national
swimming champion this year
by overcoming her mind, not
her opponents.
Before this year, the faster
swimming times of her stronger-
looking competitors thrashed
her confidence even before she
plunged into the pool, she said.
“I’ve always had kind of a
confidence problem,” Thomas
said. “I have a tendency to notice
other people around me a little
bit too much.”
But this year was different
for the 6-foot-l, University of
Kansas athlete from Lawton,
Okla. Experience, a sports
psychologist and a coach who
believed in her ability combined
to make her a record-breaker at
the March NCAA champion
ship in Lincoln, Neb.
“I started believing in my
self,” Thomas said. “I finally
realized that I am strong enough
to swim with the top sprinters in
the nation.”
In her graduating year at
Kansas, the 21-year-old dark
horse set an NCAA record in the
50-yard freestyle and the 100-
yard freestyle with
22.17 and 48.40. ShenotK
