Workers' tests
show radiation
United Press International
WEBSTER — Preliminary
tests have found measurable
amounts of contaminants in the
bodies of five workers at Gulf
Nuclear Inc., according to state
health department officials.
They were suspected of being
exposed to radiation during an
accidental leak of materials at
the company.
Richard Ratliff, director of
compliance and control for the
State Health Department’s
bureau of radiation control, said
Tuesday further tests will be re
quired to determine if the em
ployees received harmful
amounts of radiation doses.
The initial results released
came from Oak Ridge National
Laboratories in Oak Ridge,
Tenn.
Nine employees were ex
posed to radiation Feb. 8 when a
worker accidentally sliced
through a capsule containing
Americium-241, an isotope used
in the petroleum industry.
The company apparently
violated the law by failing to re
port the accident, but employee
Ken Kielwein, 26, wrote the
state health department about
the incident.
The company’s operating
license was indefinitely sus
pended March 18 for failing to
notify the state, failure to evalu
ate the situation and the possible
exposure to the employees.
That suspension was over
ruled by a judge in Austin, who
said the state health department
did not have the authority to
order a suspension.

Ag committee approves
pesticide authority bill
United Press International
WASHINGTON — The
House Agriculture Committee’s
approval of a bill extending au
thority for the government’s
pesticide programs for one year
is only the first step, Rep. Kika
de la Garza, D-Texas, reports.
The measure, approved by
the committee on a voice vote,
next goes to the full House for
consideration.
The committee’s decision
Tuesday overruled a subcom

with appeals by the Reagan
administration and chemical in

ticide Act for two years.
Environmentalists were seek
ing a one-year extension of the
law that governs registration
and use of farm and home pesti
cides.
“I am glad, of course, that we
are moving the re-authorization
bill along without delay, but I
hope everybody interested in
this important issue under
stands that passage is just the
first step in what the committee
views as a two-phase proce
dure,” de la Garza said.
“The second phase will in
volve many issues including pos
sible changes in the pesticide law
which need to be addressed by
our committee. I can assure all
concerned that we will begin
consideration of those
as promptly as possible
