WASHINGTON — The per
capita personal income of
Americans rose slightly less than
their cost of living last year,
going up 5.3 percent to $11,056,
the Commerce Department re
ports.
In 15 states, however, mostly
in the Northeast, the increase
was more than the national fi
gure, the department’s bureau
of economic analysis reported
Sunday.
State per capita personal in
come, said the report, ranged
from $15,200 in Alaska to
$7,792 in Mississippi.
Although the national in
come figure rose by 5.3 percent,
an adjusted figure showed an in
crease of 5.9 percent in cost of
living.

who believes her teenage daugh

cause they live above an aban
doned asbestos mine Monday
urged a House subcommittee to
pressure the Environmental
Protection Agency for a remedy.
“This situation is horrible,”
Catherine Scott told the Energy
and Commerce oversight and
investigations subcommittee.
“The EPA has probably reduced
us all to some statistic.”
Scott lives at the Mountain
View Mobile Home Estates in
Globe, Ariz., site of an aban
doned asbestos mine.
That site and another called
Tar Creek in Oklahoma — rank
ed in 1981 as the nation’s worst
hazardous waste site — are the
subject of a hearing on the EPA’s
lack of progress in cleaning
them up.
Sen. Dennis Deconcini, D-
Ariz., blasted the environmental
agency for inaction.
“I’ve been appalled at the dis
