Texas A&M The Battalion Sports Monday, May 2, 1983/The Battalion/Page 11 Men’s track team picks up seven firsts at FSU meet from staff and wire reports They had to travel quite some distance to do it, but both the men’s and women’s track teams were able to gain some ground this weekend in preparation for the upcoming NCAA Track and Field Championships. The Texas A&M men’s track team picked up seven First place finishes in the Sunshine Relays at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. And Suzanne Sheffield — running in the 800-meter run at the 74th annual Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa — finished with a season best, a NCAA qual ifying standard and an Athletic Congress qualifying standard. She came in second with a time of 2:05.49. Texas A&M’s Novaita Samuels placed fourth in the 100-meter dash with an 11.76 in the invitation only meet. Several national records were broken at the Drake Relays — including one by a Southwest Conference school. The SMU relay crew of Rob Topping, Rus sell Mitchell, Ben Bor and Paul Rugut completed the university distance medley relay in 9:30.45, breaking Kansas State’s Rod Richardson finished first in 100-meter dash 1972 national mark by almost one second. Alabama’s relay team, led by Calvin Smith, shattered a col legiate sprint medley relay mark and eclipsed two other meet re cords. The Crimson Tide squad of LeMar Smith, Calvin Smith, Terry Menefee and William Wuyke sped to a sprint medley relay time of 3:12.19, beating Oklahoma’s collegiate mark of 3:13.39 set in 1981. Alabama also broke Drake re cords in winning the men’s 4 x 400-and 4 x 100-meter relays. No world records are kept for the sprint medley relay, but Ala bama’s time is believed to be the best ever. A total of 10 Drake marks fell and one was tied Saturday at sunny Drake Stadium before a crowd of 18,000. Thirteen men’s teams partici pated in the Sunshine Relays, though no team scores were kept. Coach Charlie Thomas said he was especially pleased with the performance of Clif Chatham in the running events. Although he was running in only his second of the year, Chatham finished third in the 400-meter hurdles and ran with the fifth place mile relay team.
