Astros edge Reds on 3-run homer United Press International HOUSTON — To most ma- or league teams, a two-game (inning streak is nothing to get jccited about. But to the Hous- on Astros, who started the sea- on with a 10-game losing treak, it’s like a dream come le. The Astros defeated the Cin- nati Reds 6-5 on the strength ifpinch-hitter Harry Spilman’s Iramatic two-out, three-run lome run in the ninth inning. Jose Cruz started the Astros’ ly with a lead-off double off iliever Tom Hume, 0-1, and |ne out later, Terry Buhl alked. Alan Ashby hit into a [ielder’s choice before Spilman, linch-hitting for winner Bill )awley, 2-0, hit a shot over the ight center-field fence. For Hume, it was a bad ex perience. 1 Baltinn “j feel real bad about it all,” knudhi lesaiei "] didn’t want to walk lim (Spilman) and put the tying dtohiti unon second for Moreno. I got the pitch up though and Harry is a good hit ter and he hit it well.” The Reds took an early 4-0 lead in the first inning with four runs off Joe Niekro. Cincinnati’s Cesar Cedeno started the rally when he dou bled and advanced to third on an error by Niekro, which allowed Eddie Milner to reach base. Cedeno scored on catcher John Mizerock’s passed ball and Johnny Bench doubled home Milner before Dan Driessen hit CLASSIFIED ADS - Three Aggie golfers selected to all-conference golf squad Making the teamrBrandel Chamb- lee, the newly crowned Southwest Con ference golf champion, was one of pine unanimous selections to the all-SWC golf team announced Tuesday. Coming back to school: Remember a couple of seasons ago when the Olsen Sports File Field public address system would ring with the name “R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R-R- R-R-R-Rodney Hodde?” Hodde, a for mer Texas A&M baseball player who set Texas A&M records for career RBIs, sea son RBIs, career Southwest Conference home runs and season doubles, was in town over the weekend to visit friends and to look for a place to live. After play ing for a season with the Texas Rangers’ Class A farm club in Burlington, Iowa, Hodde was cut the past June and went to work for the Cactus Wellhead oil pro ducts company in Lafayette, La., in July. Hodde, who got married in November, plans to return to school here in the sum mer. Although he majored in animal sci ence until leaving to play for the Burling ton club, Hodde said he plans to go into mechanical engineering starting this summer and hopes to have his degree in about two years. And Hodde says base ball isn’t in his future: “The Rangers are going to go with the guys they’ve put their money into, so I don’t think there’s a chance I’ll be playing any more. Texas might have been the club I could have played with, but that didn’t work out.” Not so neat:Former Texas A&M place-kicker Tony Franklin said after Saturday’s varsity-alumni game that for mer Philadelphia Eagles coach Dick Ver- miel wasn’t as popular a guy as some might have thought. “A lot of guys are glad he’s gone,” Franklin said. “He had a bad habit of burning people out too quick. We’d start out and win our first eight games and then struggle to win two out of our last eight.” Wednesday Night is 50 c Margarita Night at TEXAS * J Margaritas by the glass 5(F Margaritas by the pitcher *6°° Buy a pitcher & we’li throw in an order of nachos for $1.00 L Culpepper Plaza 696-' Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity {Announces Their Seventh Annuall FIGHT NIGHT Friday Admission: $ 3 00 presale $ 4 00 gate April 22 & Saturday, April 23 Brazos County Pavillion (East Bypass at Tabor Rd.)
