DALLAS — A tough anti-
drug program instituted by buil
ders to check widespread drug
use by construction workers and
rising accident rates has been
condemned by union leaders
critical of surprise searches and
blacklisting.

ing to discuss a possible protest
of the program by the Dallas
chapter of the Associated Gen

Teacher loses latest appeal
claims fired for communism

HOUSTON — A math
teacher lost the latest round of
appeals to get reinstated to her
post when a Houston school
committee rejected her argu
ment she was fired because she
was a communist.
Instead the panel said she was
fired because she did not follow
nrders and falsified informa
tion.

HOUSTON — A woman ac
cused of plotting the death of
defense lawyer Percy Foreman
will have to stand trial again on
the charges.
State District Judge Doug
Shaver said Monday discovery
of a tape recording of a secret
meeting between defendant
Susan Parrish, 40, and a private
detective working for the police
made it impossible for Parrish to
receive a fair trial and ordered a
mistrial.
Shaver said he had listened to
the tape and found it devastat
ing to lawyer Craig Washing
ton’s defense the woman had
been entrapped by overzealous
detectives anxious for an arrest.
“In other words, the defen
dant is saying through it (the
tape) she did plan and commis
sion the offense. It’s rather
clear,” Shaver said.
He said he ruled the mistrial
because “the defense was not
given what they were supposed
to be given. Then, they cannot
prepare a defense consistent
with the recordings that the state
was going to use against them.”
Prosecutors contend Parrish,
the ex-wife of a millionaire oil
man, sought revenge against the
80-year-old Foreman — her di
vorce lawyer in 1978. Prosecu
tors said she was angered be
cause she thought Foreman had
“sold her out” in the divorce.
Shaver said Parrish would be
retried. A trial date was not set
immediately.
Washington said he would
move to have Parrish released
on bond. She has been jailed
since her arrest last year during
a meeting with an undercover
detective in which she gave him
$2,000 for truth serum and
poison.
At the time of her arrest, Par
rish was on probation on a con
viction for trying to run over her
ex-husband with her Cadillac.
