New musical opens
tonight in Rudder

The Theater Arts program at
Texas A&M will present the first
production of a new play,
“Transit,” at 8 tonight through
Saturday night in Rudder
Theater.
Transit was written by a
Houston theater critic, Sue
Dauphin, and the lyrics were set
to music by a Bryan resident,
Penelope Kosztolnyik.
The play is a musical comedy
about a ship crossing the Pana
ma Canal. A committee from the
shipping lines is expected to re
view the ship captain’s job, but
before the committee arrives,
the captain of the ship is injured.

major from Bryan, plays the
part of Jane, while Kordell Reid,
a junior journalism major from
Indiana, plays the part of Larry,
the first mate.
The captain is played by Lu-
cien Stavenhagen, a sophomore
general studies major from
Caldwell; D.C. Ometer, an elec-
tonics technician on the ship, is
played by Jim Frazier; a radio
man named Sparks is played by
Randy Lemmon, a junior jour
nalism major from Houston and
the captain’s wife is played by
Patti Fulton, a senior English
major from Dallas.
The play, which began re
hearsal less than five weeks ago,
is perfectly cast, Kosztolnyik
says.
Dauphin, author of “Houston
by Stages,” heard the music
Kosztolnyik wrote for the play
“The Invisible Man” by Eddie
Cope and asked Kosztolnyik to
write the music for “Transit.”
Richard Sodders, director of
the Theater Arts program, is di
recting the play. Steven Young,
music director at First Christian
Church in Bryan, is music dire
ctor and vocal coach.
Marcella Wells, a sophomore
parks and recreation major, is
choreographer for the play and
Alan Donahue, a member of the
English department, is the scene
designer.
Tickets are $2.50 for students
and $3.50 for non-students and
are on sale at the MSC box
office.
