Sheffield’s winning time of 4:18.82 was 10 seconds under her previous best and six seconds under the NCAA qual ifying mark. She also set an Aggie school record with her winning performance. The Texas Relays is an annual invitational that features college, junior college, high school and open club divisions. Some 750 athletes representing 64 universities and colleges com peted in the meet — hosted by the University of Texas and held in Memorial Stadium on the UT campus. Capturing her fourth 1500- meter title of the outdoor season Saturday, Sheffield wowed the Memorial Stadium crowd of more that 9,000 by sprinting past Texas long distance runner Tara Arnold in the final 25 meters of the race. But Sheffield wasn’t the only Aggie who placed this weekend. Competing for the Aggie men in the 1500-meters, Andy Elliott ran four seconds under his season best and captured third place with a 3:48.6/. Wil liam Johnson of TCU won the race in 3:47.4 1. Texas A&M’s Chuck Perry qualified for the NCAA cham pionships and finished fourth overall by clearing 7-3 on his third attempt in the high jump. Brian Tietjens of Iowa State won the high jump in 7-6, the eighth best jump ever by an American. The 1600-meter relay, con sisting of Clif Chatham, Bill Shelton, Bart Daniel and Chap- pelle Henderson continued the record-setting trend by running a season best of 3:07.35 in dieir event. Suzanne Fort Worth’s Billy Martin captures second annual Texas Triathlon event by Tracey Taylor at the second annual Texas Battalion Staff Triathlon, which included a Billy Martin of Fort Worth field of 900 entrants from all was the overall winner Saturday over Texas and 1 1 other states.
