Suzanne Sheffield wins fourth 1500-
meter run at Texas Relays in Austin
by Tracey Taylor
Battalion Staff
Texas A&M’s Suzanne Shef
field won the 1500-meter run at
the Texas Relays this weekend
to capture the only Aggie first
place in a meet attended by both
the men’s and women’s teams.
Sheffield’s winning time of
4:18.82 was 10 seconds under
her previous best and six
seconds under the NCAA qual
ifying mark. She also set an
Aggie school record with her
winning performance.
The Texas Relays is an
annual invitational that features
college, junior college, high
school and open club divisions.
Some 750 athletes representing
64 universities and colleges com
peted in the meet — hosted by
the University of Texas and held
in Memorial Stadium on the UT
campus.
Capturing her fourth 1500-
meter title of the outdoor season
Saturday, Sheffield wowed the
Memorial Stadium crowd of
more that 9,000 by sprinting
past Texas long distance runner
Tara Arnold in the final 25
meters of the race.
But Sheffield wasn’t the only
Aggie who placed this weekend.
Competing for the Aggie
men in the 1500-meters, Andy
Elliott ran four seconds under
his season best and captured
third place with a 3:48.6/. Wil
liam Johnson of TCU won the
race in 3:47.4 1.
Texas A&M’s Chuck Perry
qualified for the NCAA cham
pionships and finished fourth
overall by clearing 7-3 on his
third attempt in the high jump.
Brian Tietjens of Iowa State won
the high jump in 7-6, the eighth
best jump ever by an American.
The 1600-meter relay, con
sisting of Clif Chatham, Bill
Shelton, Bart Daniel and Chap-
pelle Henderson continued the
record-setting trend by running
a season best of 3:07.35 in dieir
event.

Martin, 26, completed the
course, which included a l-
kilometer swim, a 10 kilometer
run and 30 kilometer hike race,
in 1.48:00. Despite the victory,
the time was 10 minutes off the

The woman with the best
time this year was Jann Girard,

Johnny Bench played so poor
ly last season it was felt by many
he should step aside and let a
younger man take his place at
third base.
Well, Bench seems deter
mined to show everyone he can
still contribute. Sunday he went
3-for-4 to raise his batting aver
age to .476, and knocked in
three runs to help) the Cincinnati
Reds defeat the Chicago Cubs,
7-2.
On two occasions the Cubs
walked the batter ahead of
Bench intentionally to fill the
bases.
“They walked to get to him
twice today and he came
through twice,” said Reds’ Man
ager Russ Nixon. “That word
might get around.”
Cub Manager Lee Elia said he
was just trying to make the best
out of a bad situation each time.
“What are you going to do?
Who is easier, Concepcion or
Bench? Pick one, the; 1 Aggk
hit. poh;
“So I took my chanceij

at the plate. I knowf
