    Balloon marks 50 years
King Kong returns to NY
United Press International
NEW YORK — A crew of 20
men worked a quarter of a mile
up in the sky early Thursday to
inflate a 10-story-tall King Kong
balloon, hooked to the spire of
the Empire State Building.
The rubber Kong was hoisted
atop the building to mark the
50th anniversary of the original
King Kong Film starring Fay
Wray as the beast’s unwilling
mate.
In the movie by master ani
mator Willis O’Brien, it was dif
ficult to bring Kong down from
the top of the building. Putting
him back up has been an equally
difficult task.
Wires tangled on the mons
ter’s left leg held up the inflating
process for more than a day and
a half.
A 600-pound electric pump
was to be used to blow up the
giant balloon through its left
heel. The foot is 30 feet in cir
cumference.
“It’s easy to lay it out on the
ground, but when you do it a
quarter of a mile in the air it’s a
different story,” said Charles
Guigno, a spokesman for the
building management.
He promised once the balloon
was inflated, its feet resting on
the building’s 88th floor of the
102-story art deco skyscraper,
Kong would “glare out over
New Jersey.”
The 2,500-pound inflatable
gorilla exhausted the team of
workmen who struggled three
days to get him through the
building’s elevator system, then
lashed to the side of the
building.
I hey had to repeat the rig
ging job Wednesday because
Kong’s head broke loose from
supporting ropes just before
midnight Tuesday.

PATERSON, N.J. — Defense
and prosecution were to tangle
Thursday at boxer Tony Ayala
Jr.’s rape trial over whether the
junior welterweight’s previous
criminal record could be intro
duced into evidence.
Judge Amos Saunders will
conduct a hearing to determine
if the Passaic County Superior
Court jury should hear about an
attempted rape charge filed
against Ayala in 1978 and a
burglary charge against him last
year.
Both incidents allegedly
occured in San Antonio, Texas,
Ayala’s hometown.
Assistant Prosecutor Ronald
Marmo was expected to claim
that Ayala’s record shows a
patern of criminal behavior, but
defense attorney William De
Marco will argue such informa
tion would be overly prejudicial
and should be excluded.

MIAMI — “Shocked and in
censed” officials of Biscayne
Federal Savings and Loan Asso
ciation vowed to file suit Thurs
day to block what they called an
“arbitrary and capricious”
takeover by federal regulators
who declared the firm insolvent
and shut it down.
In closing Biscayne Federal
Wednesday, the regulators said
it would open for business as
usual Thursday as the New Bis
cayne Federal Savings and Loan
— a federal mutual association
under the guidance of the Fed
eral Savings and Loan Insur
ance Corp.
The Federal Home Loan
Bank Board acted quickly
Wednesday to protect deposi
tors and creditors of the $2 bil
lion association. It suspended
trading in Biscayne Federal
stock at 11:40 a.m., moved in
200 federal bank experts, then
put the association into the
hands of the FSLIC as receiver
about 3 p.m.
An undisclosed amount of
new money was injected to make
the new association solvent.
The move left approximately
1,500 people holding about 1.9
million shares of worthless stock
in Biscayne Federal, which had
for more than a year struggled
for solvency. The stock was trad
ing at $5.37, down $1.37, with
7,100 shares traded, at the time
of the bank board order.
