Monday, April 4, 1983/The Battalion/Page 5 Dust storm winds cause B-CS damage The broken cross-guard at Villa Maria and Pinfeather is part of the damage caused by a dust storm which hit Bryan-College Station Friday bringing strong winds. from staff and wire reports No injuries were reported, but flights were delayed, signs were destroyed and power lines were downed as a West Texas dust storm hit Bryan- College Station Friday. Winds at Easterwood Air port gusted to as high as 55 mph causing several flights to be cancelled or delayed, said Chip Yantis of the College Station Flight Service, an arm of the Federal Aviation Admi nistration. Other planes left as sche duled but were required to fly by instruments instead of sight because of the poor visi bility due to the wind and dust, Yantis said. The Skaggs Center sign on South College was another casualty of the wind. Large pieces of the sign were blown onto the road, and College Station firefighters were cal led in to knock down the rest of the sign. Several College Station re sidents were without power for up to an hour after the wind blew down power lines. Bryan residents also experi enced temporary power losses. Before reaching Bryan- College Station, the winds kil led two and injured at least 13 in other parts of Texas. In Lubbock, the high winds and low temperatures caused the wind chill factor to drop below zero. A bus collided with a truck outside of Big Spring causing a pile-up that injured 10 people. In Killeen, a lineman was killed while repairing two power transformers knocked out by the wind. And in Dallas, a man fell to his death from a freeway over pass while chasing his hat. White wants new industry United Press International EL PASO — Acknowledging that Texas is changing because of the decline oLthe oil and gas industry, Gov. Mark White promised to pursue new areas that would help develop a broader industrial base in the state. White told El Paso business leaders Thursday that he would work closely with county judges and commissioners to develop new industry. White, who pointed out that Texas was in a “state of change” with the decline of the oil and gas industry, said the Texas In dustrial Commission would aggressively pursue new indus try for the state in order to meet with the changing times by de veloping a broader industrial base for Texas. “The Texas Industrial Com mission and I will work closely with you to attract industries to small communities as well as the large urban centers,” the gov ernor said. White commended Peggy Rosson, an El Paso housewife he appointed to the Public Utilities Commission, for her “hard work” on the board, adding she was working on toughening reg ulations to avoid unnecessary utility rate increases. He said utility companies would have to better justify fu ture rate increase requests. During his three-hour visit to El Paso, White also addressed the West Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association and visited the adult probation residential facility, during his visit to El Paso.
