During the spring, basketball performances and parades fill the band’s schedule. Another major group, Par sons’ Mounted Cavalry, was formed in 1972 to preserve the traditions of the University prior to World War II. It is com posed of junior and senior cadets who wish to work with horses. Juniors are responsible for preparation of the horses and maintenance of the facilities and seniors handle administra tive work. John Motley, executive offic er of the Cavalry, said the unit is closer knit than the other units because members work closely together. He said they haul their own hay, have built their own 36-stall barn for the stock and have been preparing pastures for planting. The Cavalry drills three to four times a week in preparation for march-ins, Corps cere monies before home football games and Corps trips. The group also rides in various lives tock show parades, such as the Fort Worth and Houston lives tock show parades, Motley said. He said the Cavalry will travel to San Antonio to ride in the “Bat tle of Flowers Parade” later in April. Other groups include: • Fish Drill Team — The group was created in 1947 after a suo- den increase in enrollment caused a housing problem. The freshman class was forced to be separated from the rest of the senool so members decided to form the drill team to occupy their time. The team is made up of select freshman members with a satis factory academic record. They participate in drill meets at the state and national level, Mardi Gras parade and Military Day and Parents’ Day ceremonies. • Women’s Drill Team — In the spring of 1975, John Miller and Theresa Holzeman created the group so female cadets would have an activity in which to become involved. Women in all classes are eligi ble to be in the drill team. Mar ching positions are held by women only, but the staff posi tions may be held by men or women. The team participates in drill meets both in and out of state, parades and Parents’ Day ceremonies. techniques and proceduresm by the Army. Texas currently is unable to take advantage of a new federal rule which allows states to hold people financially responsible for the care given their indigent parents under the Medicaid program. “In Texas, we have no law providing that children owe support for their parents,” said Bill Woods. “To take advantage of this rule, it would require enabling legislation,” he said.
