David Bowie's first single from the soon-to-be-released album, "Let's Dance," is a mid- tempo song that effectively mixes sounds from the 50s with those of the 80s. Co-produced by Nile Rodgers of Chic, the single "Let's ets mixed review Dance," keeps a steady bass line beat sparsely punctuated with keyboard and guitar. Bowie's vocals are compara ble to his recent albums — slightly strained, heavily anguished. With the additon of congas, saxophone and a Beach Boys vocal opening, the song becomes a possible dance hit. The album version is twice as long as the single with added sax and guitar solos and more than enough room for re mixing. The single doesn't have the radio appeal of Soft Cell's "Tainted Love," but will certain ly apeal to Bowie fans and rock club audiences alike. On the flip side is a speeded- up version of "Putting out Fire" from the movie, Cat People. The soundtrack was chiefly a mood piece heavily infused with synthesizer (it was co-written wih Giorgio Moroder), but this is straight-forward rock cut with a great guitar hook. — Cary Stegall GOING SHOPPING?
