New computer advantageous
for forestry students, faculty

Computers are playing an im
portant role in the forestry de
partment at Texas A&M, says
Ed J. Soltes, professor of wood
chemistry.
Forestry students, faculty
and staff in the forest science
department are not just talking
about computers —they are us
ing them, he said.
Soltes received nationwide
recognition in February for his
research on agricultural waste
material. In his research, Soltes
found that wastes such as saw
dust, pecan hulls and cottonseed
hulls can be fossilized into a
crude oil substitute for pet
roleum.
For the past five weeks,
Soke’s research has been easier
because of a new IBM compu
ter. The computer is used by fa
culty and graduate students who
are involved in research in the
forest science department.
The forestry department
needed a new means of separat
ing and storing data in the forest
science lab, Soltes said, and the
IBM computer serves the pur
pose. The department received
the computer from the Center
for Energy and Mineral Re
sources.
He said there are two impor
tant aspects to consider when us
ing computers. One aspect is
doing the research. T he other is
communicating the research to
the public. The computer is
helpful in the communication
process.
Teaching students about the
computer is a main goal for the
forestry department at this time,
Soltes said, because it is impor
tant for students to learn to use
computers in this day and age.
