Ex-drug dealer turns informant
United Press International
NEW YORK — He was the
drug king of Harlem who once
boasted he was “Mr. Untouch
able.” Now, in prison, Leroy
“Nicky” Barnes has become a
prince among government in
formers.
Barnes says he is weary of
prison and wants to get out the
only way he can — by presiden
tial pardon. That is the reason

he gave for turning government
informer.
Barnes’ information has put
nine of his former drug-dealing
associates and the woman who
bore two of his four children be
hind bars.
Because of his new vocation,
he said, some of his former asso
ciates want him hit.
The government said his old
buddies last week put out a $1
million murder contract on 50-
year-old Barnes.
However, a defense attorney
for the former Barnes’ associ
ates denied the contract charge.
“Next to Ronald Reagan, Mr.
Barnes is probably the most pro
tected man in the-country. It
would be utterly ridiculous for
these people to attempt any
thing like this,” he said.
Barnes self-portrayal as “Mr.
Untouchable” aroused indigna
tion. According to some, the
word went out from the White
House to the Justice Depart
ment to get Barnes.
And get him they did. He was
hauled into federal court in
Manhattan and convicted on
charges that he headed a ring
which peddled 44 pounds of he-

roin a month for about seven
years.
He was sentenced in 1978 to
life in prison without parole.
Last week Barnes emerged in
public as a witness for the pro
secution. He testified in court in
Manhattan at a minor narcotics
trial of a young man he helped
indict.
Barnes told an attentive audi
ence that he had decided to turn
government informer just a year
ago.
He also told how he set up a
“Council of Seven” consisting of
himself and six independent he
roin dealers to control drug dis
tribution in the New' York area.
Barnes said he got irked when
he learned his former girl
friends had taken up with his
buddies on the “Council of
Seven.”
I hat, he said, was why he re
vealed them and their heroin
activities — that and his hope of
an eventual pardon.
