Or maybe to ski the slopes in Col orado? Wherevever you go, make sure and promise to send a postcard to your favo rite friend or family member, reminding them "wish you were here." There are two kinds of peo ple in the world. Those who view postcards as something you promise to send home but never do, and those who re gard the color-enhanced sun sets and tourist attractions with an awe usually reserved for fine art. What sets these postcard connoisseurs apart from the rest of us is a taste for tacki ness —and the tackier the bet ter. The credit for these tacky temptations can be given to Mike Roberts - the father of the color picture postcard. In the late thirties, Roberts was one of the first to develop a method of printing a color photograph on postcard stock. He traveled the coun try, snapping pictures, writ ing descriptive blurbs, and distributing his cards. Collectors make up 40 to 50 percent of postcard sales, some willing to spend hun dreds of dollars on antique versions. So hang on to those tacky state flags, giant jackrabbits, and parrots riding unicycles. They may be tomorrow's col lector's items. M-l-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E on ice Master of Ceremonies Mickey Mouse is your host at the Houston Premiere of Walt Disney's World on Ice open ing Tuesday, March 22 at the Summit. This fantasyland on ice continues through Sunday, March 27 for nine perform ances and stars a host of Dis neyland characters, as well as a star-studded roster of inter nationally renowned figure skaters. Featured as Snow White is Linda Fratianne, 1980 Olym pic Champion, twice World Champion, and four-time Na tional Champion and Guin ness Book world record hol der, Vern Taylor. Five decades of Disney fables are brought to life in cluding "Pinocchio", "The Jungle Book", "Cinderella", and "Sleeping Beauty". Tickets for the event go on sale Monday, Feb. 21 at The Literally, a Texas tradition Twenty-nine Texas fiction, folklore and history writers will discuss "The Texas Liter ary Tradition" at a conference held on March 24, 25, and 26 in the LBJ Auditorium on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin. This confer ence is in celebration of the Centennial of the University of Texas and is sponsored by the UT College of Liberal Arts. The conference will explore the dimensions of the Texas literary tradition, covering topics such as "The Texas- Mexican Perspective," "The Texas Mystique, and "The Vanishing Frontier." Truly a woman's book Mmaimunh J All you ERA supporters out there will appreciate Richard Peck's latest novel, This Fami ly of Women. This novel is ab out a group of women whose spirit brings them through the turbulent times in America and Britain between 1850 and 1939. Richard Peck's inspiration for creating this novel came out of a desire to write about American women who rose in their worlds "not because they were born to the right fathers or married the right husbands."
