NEW YORK — The baby talk
mothers use with their children
helps the babies understand lan
guage, says Dr. Daniel L. Stern
of Cornell University Medical
College.
“The mother’s special way of
speaking — in particular, her
use of exaggerated pitch
changes and musical phraseolo
gy in her speech — serves two
very important functions,” the
psychiatrist says in an article in
the March issue of Parents
magazine.
What Stern calls Motherese
helps babies decode meaningful
units of speech and teaches ab
out the emotional content of
speech, he says.
“It teaches them the things
they have to know before they
can even begin to understand
the language,” he says.
Stern says Motherese varies
significantly, depending on a
child’s age.
Mothers exhibit a greater
range of pitches with 2- to 6-
month-olds than with newborns
or 12- to 24-month-olds, whose
language comprehension is well
under way, he says.

GALVESTON — Galveston
County officials say they are en
couraged by promises made by
the owners of a troubled sewage
treatment plant on Tiki Island
to repair the system and halt pol
lution in Galveston Bay.
“As long as they show good
faith efforts, there is no need to
take it to the courts. If not, we
have the option to file a lawsuit,”
said Assistant Galveston County
Attorney Harvey Bazaman
Bazaman and Dr. Ed Ibert of
the Galveston Health Depart
ment met with the new owners
of Gulf Utility Co. Monday to
id
discuss the problems posed by
the faulty sewage treatment
plant.
Last summer, scores of Tiki
Island residents suffered from
vomiting and diarrhea after bac
teria associated with human fec
al matter appeared in the is
land’s community fresh water
system.
In recent years, the commun
ity of 220 homes has had prob
lems with sewage backing up in
homes and yards.
Bazaman said he was encour
aged by the promises of the own
ers to repair and upgrade the
system.
Gulf Utility President David
Schoolcraft and Secretary Jim
Kite promised to make repairs
“in order to make it an opera
tional system.”
Bazaman said there are no
plans to file suit against the com
pany at this time.
An inspection of the sewage
treatment facility is planned for
later this week. A lift station,
which is a wet well where sewage
is moved to the treatment facil
ity, is being built this week, offi
cials said.

PASADENA — A newspaper
Wednesday reported a waste
disposal firm has been burning
two deadly herbicides with
traces of dioxin for three weeks.
Rollins' Environmental Ser
vices is burning Silvex and 2,4,5-
T, two chemicals banned after
being suspected as the causes for
miscarriages in Oregon, the
Houston Post said.
The Environmental Protec
tion Agency is paying Rollins
$820,000 for transporting the
chemicals from Alabama and
burning them.
Both EPA and Rollins’ offi
cials say the burning gets rid of
all the deadly liquid substances
with no hazard to anyone’s
health.
The Rollins incinerator has
been the site of controversial
PCB burnings for years.
Company spokesman Jerry
D. Neel said Silvex and the other
chemically similar herbicide
were being burned along with
PCBs. The incineration is ex
pected to continue for nine
weeks.
State Rep. Ed Watson of Deer
Park, when told by the newspap
er of the Silvex burning, con
tacted the Texas Air Control
Board and asked them to look
into the situation.
EPA official Ray Krueger in
Washington, D.C., said it was de
cided a public hearing was not
necessary.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of
Appeals, responding to a 1970
suit to dismantle segregation of
students and faculty, Tuesday
let stand a order for the South

The 5th Circuit backed a low

alternate plans presented by the
school district and an interven

continue to encourage “white

The proposed alternative

children, the court said, point

children attending seven diffe

LAS VEGAS, Nev. — Police

threats since the discovery of
dynamite at three casinos, con

of three threats.
Police Tuesday ordered the
evacuation of the 10,000-
student university and searched
the 360-acre campus.
Hundreds of students who
live on campus were moved to a
motel, and the university’s 24-
hour, student-operated radio
station, KUNV-FM, was shut
down.
University President Dr.
Leonard Goodall said the cam
pus would be reopened when
police and campus security
assured him there were no
bombs at the university.
Three telephoned threats
were received Tuesday evening
saying bombs had been planted
on the campus. Three dynamite
bombs also were discovered at
three casino-hotels Monday.
Jittery casino owners have
hired extra security guards to
patrol the posh gambling resorts
as bogus bomb threats compli

three bombs.

Chief John Sullivan
Tuesday.
