Tom Chandler didn’t look
erly excited about the 600th
ctory of his 25-year coaching
reer.
After pitcher Rick Luecken
id recorded the final out of the
gies'4-0 victory over Hardin-
mmons in Saturday’s double-
adet, Chandler headed lo
ud the dugout. Several of his
ers stopped Chandler in his
teks.
Wait just a minute. Coach,

As co-captains Clint Heard
Rock King escorted him to
home plate area, Chandler
«l to act as if he didn't know
iat was going on. But if you
ed really hard, you could
an “Aw shucks, guys” twinkle
his eyes. The 56-year-old
andler just didn’t want every-
to see how thrilled he felt
out winning No. 600.
After being given the game
by his players, Chandler
Iked toward the dugout while

Senior Clint Heard leads
Texas A&M with 12 hits
nings Friday night. Todd
Tschantz, a freshman from
Richardson Lake Highlands,
pitched the final two innings,
giving up two walks and striking
out two.
The Aggies scored three runs
in the first inning and two in the
second to take a 5-0 lead off the
Cowboys’ Scott Tibbels, who
pitched a complete game, giving
up eight runs and 10 hits. Five of
the Aggies’ hits went for extra
bases, as Clint Heard, Buddy
Haney and Todd Edwards had
doubles, Billy Cannon had a tri
ple and Kevin Smith hit a solo
homer.
Texas A&M added single
runs in the fifth, sixth and
eighth innings, while Hardin-
Simmons scored its only run in
the fourth. Third baseman Ro
ger Sands, who had two of the
Cowboys’ five hits, knocked in
Mike Anderson after a double.
For the Aggies, Heard had
three hits and scored two runs
and Haney had two hits, two
RBIs and scored two runs.
Haney’s single in the first inning
brought home Texas A&M’s
first two runs of the game.
With the second base-
shortstop-first base combination
of Heard, Edwards and Haney,
the Aggies turned four double
plays in the game.
Luecken, coming off a com
bined no-hitter with sophomore
Sherman Corbett against St.
Mary’s on Wednesday, finished
Saturday’s opener with three
strikeouts and two walks. The
senior right-hander gave up
only a double in the second in
ning and singles in the fifth,
sixth and seventh innings in win
ning his second game against
one defeat.
Luecken lost the Aggies’ sea
son opener 4-3 to Southwestern
on Feb. 19.
Two-hit performances by
Heard, Haney and Edwards led
the Aggies to a total of nine for
the game, as Hardin-Simmons
starter Brian Flook gave up all
four runs and nine hits in S'/s
innings of pitching. Likewise,
Edwards, Haney and Heard had
RBIs, while catcher Ron De-
vereaux added an RBI single in
the second inning.
Although the Aggies commit
ted two errors in the victory,
they combined for two more
double plays to bring their sea
son total to 13 in six games.
Chandler cited two players for
dazzling defensive plays, as Ed-
i wards dove at deep shortstop for
a grounder and forced a Har
din-Simmons runner in the
sixth inning and Robison dove
across the left field line to grab a
fly ball in the fourth inning.
Chandler said the two Cow
boy pitchers, especially starter
Eddie Jacques, kept the Aggies
off-stride with their variety of
pitches. Jacques and reliever
Frank Blaine allowed the Aggies
six hits, with two coming in the
seventh inning.
With Hardin-Simmons ahead
5-1, Texas A&M rallied to score
two runs in the final inning.
Bobby Beach walked and Robi
son singled to put runners at
first and second. Bill Potter
forced Beach at third for the
second out of the inning, Haney
was intentionally walked to load
the bases and Cannon singled
past the shortstop into left-
centerfield for two RBIs. Blaine
came in and forced right fielder
Smith to foul out, ending the
? ;ame and preserving Jacques’
irst victory of the season.
Texas A&M scored its only
run of the game in the first in
ning on Smith’s RBI single. Cor
bett, now 1-1 as an Aggie starter

Chandler said. “We’re enthu
