The Texas A&M women’s swim team placed
fourth in the Southwest Conference Meet held
Thursday, Friday and Saturday on the University
of Texas campus.
Paced by 1 SWC record, 11 school records and
5 NCAA championship meet qualifying times, the
women swam to a surprise finish behind Texas,
Houston and SMU.
Texas piled up 799 points, far ahead of run
ner-up Houston’s 444 and third-place SMI "s
294.5. Texas won 18 of 24 events during the
three-day meet.
Texas A&M’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of
Melanie Schmauch, Susan Maiks, Fileen Doull
and Jody Tanner finished first in Friday’s com
petition with a time 1:35.01. Their finish was the
fifth fastest time recorded in the nation this year
in that event. It was also a SWC record and a
school record.
Also on Friday, the 400-yard medley relay team
of Edlyn Bell, Vickie Moir, Schmauch and Tanner
finished third with a time of 3:57.20, setting a
school record and qualifying as a USS (United
States Swimming) Senior National time.
The Aggies had 6 LJSS qualifying times.
Texas A&M broke five school records on Satur
day, including Schmauch'sseventhplacefbi 1111
the 100-yard freestyle and Tanner’s l"
finish in the 50-yard backstroke.
