United Press International
SAN FRANCISCO — After
51 hours and 23,500 miles, all
aviator Brooke Knapp wanted
was a “cold beer” to celebrate
her record-setting around the
world flight.
Instead, the 37-year-old got
roses and champagne from her
husband, Charles Knapp, as she
emerged Friday wearing a red-
and-white flight scarf from the
Lear 35 business jet “The Amer
ican Dream,” she flew for an un
official 50 hours, 32 minutes
and 45 seconds.
“All I want is an ice cold beer
and a lot of relaxation,” said
Knapp, who accepted the cham
pagne in a welcoming ceremony
at San Francisco International
Airport, the same place she left
on Wednesday. Her time was ab
out 15 hours better than the
1966 flight of Henry Beaird,
who Hew the same distance in 65
hours and 35 minutes with a
four-man crew.
Knapp, president of Jet Air
ways Inc. of Los Angeles, was
accompanied by two copilots
and a mechanic who fixed a fuel-
pump problem late Thursday in
the Caroline Islands. She called
him the “unsung hero” of the
flight.
“For me it was the greatest
adventure of my life,” she said.
Her husband said he was
“proud” of her. He said she
“turned an inordinate fear of
Hying into a profitable busi
ness.”

Can a Christian affirm alcoho
lic: beverages as a part of God's
“good gills to us?”
Yes, says a Lutheran special
ist in substance abuse.
"Until we do," adds Dr. John
E. Keller, “we will never adequ
ately, as church or society,
address issues, attitudes, be
haviors and problems that have
to do with chemical health.”
In short, says Keller, Christ
ians must move beyond a wet-
dry morality to what he calls an
“upstream” consciousness ol
chemical health.
Keller is president of the
Lutheran Center for Substance
Abuse in Park Ridge, III.
According to Keller, the most
neglected group in the church is
not the non-drinking minority
but Hie drinking majority.
“For them the church and
societv have no approvals or
guidelines as to what is hcaliln
drinking vs. unhealthy,approp
riate vs. inappropriate, au:e|)t-
able \ s. tmacceptaoie, integrated
vs. non-integralecl." he said.
