Texas A&M has a default rate of approximately 3 percent com pared to a 21 percent national and state default rate, he said. Bormann said the low default rate has allowed them to con tinue such aid programs as the federal Health Professions Stu dent Loan program. Funds for this program are allocated for institutions with a 5 percent or lower default rate. According to figures com piled by the financial aid office, Texas A&M showed a 3 percent drop in the percentage of its en rollment receiving Pell grant money in the three-year period between 1980 and 1983. In the same three-year period, Texas Tech University showed a 6 percent drop and the University of Texas showed a 4 percent drop in the percentage of students receiving grant money. The decreases rellect a stif fening of eligibility require ments in the Pell grant program, but also rellect each university’s consistency in providing aid, Bormann said. Although T exas A&M pro vided $ 1 million less in Pell grant money than UT, the University was more consistent in the amount it provided from year to year in comparison with other schools. Approximately one-third of the total enrollment here re ceives some form of financial aid. Dayan Adihetty, an agricul tural economics doctoral stu dent from Sri Lanka, was elected 1983-84 president of the ISA in a run-off election between him self and Sophia Iliadou of Greece, who led by one-third of a vote after the first ballot. The ISA voting system is similar to the voting process used by the United Nations. Each country, rather than each person, casts one vote which can be split fractionally for different candidates. As the new ISA president, Adihetty said he hopes to focus more closely on the various needs of foreign students. “I don’t think we should focus just on parties,” he said. “We want to meet every need of the international student — academic, personal and social.” He said he wants to develop programs in which foreign stu dents can receive more help with academics — especially students in their first year at Texas A&M. “I would like to get our seniors in the various depart ments to work with new stu dents,” he said. “I want to make ,// (sane your en V your children may need it/ YOU INTO SO ARE WE!
