Bill ups
medics’
training
United Press International
AUSTIN — Two senators
Thursday Filed legislation that
would upgrade minimum stan
dards for the equipment and
training of personnel who deliv
er emergency medical services
in Texas.
Under the current law
enacted in 1943, an ambulance
may have only one attendant,
who may be the driver, with the
equivalent of eight hours of Red
Cross first aid training.
The bill co-sponsored by
Sens. Lloyd Doggett, D-Austin,
and Bill Sarpalius, D-Amarillo,
mandates four levels of person
nel certification with a minimum
of 40 hours of training
approved by the state.
“Laws to regulate ambu
lances have not been updated in
Texas over the past 40 years,”
said Sarpalius.
