Attendance — 1000 United Press International The SMU Mustangs were making quite a nuisance of themselves at Moody Coliseum Wednesday night, but, like a good team is supposed to do, the Houston Cougars finally swat ted them away like a bothersome fly. “We didn’t play very good in the first half,” said Guy Lewis, whose sixth-rated Cougars final ly posted an 85-68 victory over the Mustangs. “But in the second half we showed some character.” And in the category of char acter, the Texas Tech Red Raid ers displayed some more of it Wednesday evening, stunning the TCU Horned Frogs in Lub bock, 67-61. The Raiders, playing with just eight men on their roster, pulled off their second straight surprise and moved to 5-5 in the Southwest Conference stand ings. Houston, owning its second best record ever at this stage of the season, has had trouble with SMU the past few years even though the Mustangs have been at the bottom of the league standings. The only conference win SMU could come up with last year was against Houston, a team that made it to the Final Four. And once again Wednesday night the Mustangs were mak ing things troublesome for Houston. SMU led by three late in the first half and trailed by just two at intermission, 31-29. But Michael Young scored 20 of his 26 points in the second half and with the Cougars hit ting 62 percent from the field they slowly pulled away. The vic tory pushed Houston to 10-0 in the league chase (a game in front of the Arkansas Razorbacks) while the Cougars season mark is 19-2. “Every coach knows you are going to have a game like this,” said Lewis. “SMU has a good basketball team. They have some players we wanted. “But not taking anything away from SMU, I wasn’t pleased at the half. I don’t mind telling you that. We came in here (the locker room) and discussed it rationally. We talked about the sign of a good ball club being that you can go on the road and win.” TCU, meanwhile, lost for the 11th consecutive time in Lub bock despite being the heavy favorite over the Raiders. Vince Taylor and Tony Ben- ford combined for 11 of 12 free throws in the final three minutes to secure Tech’s 67-61 win. Tech held a comfortable 35- 25 halftime lead before hitting a four-minute scoreless period in the second half. TCU fought back to cut the lead to one, 55- 54, with 1:47 left. But a strategy of fouling the Red Raiders in the closing seconds backfired with Taylor’s and Benford’s shooting. The Raiders have now won three of their last four SWC games, and are alone in fifth place with a 5-5 record. Valentine Special 14 Kt.
