United Press International
PHOENIX — It took only 94
minutes for jurors to convict
Giovanni Vigliotto, the man who
wore a ring inscribed “Always
alone,” but who married 105
women during worldwide ex
ploits and swindled at least one
of them out of her life savings.
Vigliotto frowned slightly
when the verdict was read Tues
day. His stoic behavior was a
sharp contrast to his conduct
during the six-week trial.
At one point, Vigliotto burst
into tears and fled from the
stand when questioned about his
. family, who allegedly was tor
tured by Nazis.
“I feel terrific,” prosecutor
Dave Stoller said after the ver
dict was read.
Patricia Gardiner, 43, the
Mesa, Ariz., real-estate agent
who accused Vigliotto of aban
doning her penniless after their
marriage, smiled and ex
claimed, “Both counts!” Vigliot
to was convicted of bigamy and
fraud in his marriage to Gar
diner.
Superior Court Judge Rufus
Coulter ordered the panel, with
out explanation, to return to the
courthouse today. It was specu
lated the jury would have to con
sider Vigliotto’s prior convic
tions involving transportation of
a stolen vehicle and transporta
tion of stolen securities.
Vigliotto’s attorney, public
defender Richard Steiner, said
earlier Vigliotto could receive a
maximum of 34 years in prison
if the prior convictions were
considered.
In his opening arguments in
the trial, Steiner described Vig
liotto as an Italian playboy.
