Bouncing back from a 17-
point halftime deficit, the Aggie
Ladies surprised the University
of Houston Lady Cougars 74-72
Saturday afternoon in G. Rollie
White Coliseum.
Michell Tatum scored the
winning points on a rebound
layup after a miss by freshman
Lisa Langston with 32 seconds
left in the game. Tatum finished
with 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Texas A&M trailed 31-6 with
eight minutes left in the First
half, but the Aggie Ladies began
their comeback and wound up
the first half trailing 46-29.

Belton quarterback Bret Staf
ford told The Battalion Sunday
night that he will sign a national
letter of intent with the Univer
sity of Texas on Wednesday.
Stafford, who was recruited
heavily by Texas A&M, said that
he felt he was destined to be a
Longhorn.
“I had a feeling inside that I
should go to Texas,” he said in a
telephone interview. “I just had
a feeling that it was the right
place to go.
“But there was nothing I
found wrong with Texas A&M,”
he added. “They were super
people and everybody was very
sincere.”
Stafford said that the Aggies’
apparent quarterback recruit
ing bonanza didn’t af fect his de
cision.
Stafford was rumored to
have changed his mind about
signing with the Aggies because
of the number of quarterbacks
who have announced they will
join Coach Jackie Sherrill in the
fall.
Port Arthur Jefferson’s Craig
Stump, Eastland’s Jay Hess,
Houston Lamar’s Paul Gasper
and A&M Consolidated’s Kip
Corrington all have announced
their intentions to sign with
Texas A&M.
However, Stafford said he
decided on Texas long before
Hess, Gasper and Corrington
made their decision.
In other recruiting news, the
Bryan-College Station Eagle re
ported Saturday that Bryan
High School seniors Todd Ho
ward and Rod Bernstine would
sign with the Aggies. Both were
unavailable for comment.
Flowers, however, is re
portedly headed for Houston,
where he could continue as
quarterback. Flowers will prob
ably be switched to defensive
back should he decide to sign
with the Aggies.
Howard and Bernstine will
reportedly make their verbal
commitments today.
Coach Cherri Rapp said she’s
never seen one of her teams
erase such a large lead.
“I think that’s probably one of
the best comebacks ever for one
of my teams,” Rapp said. “It was
really unbelievable that
were able to come back
that far down.
“Theyjust began to work har
der and a few shots began to fall
for us. We didn’t have too many
breaks in the First half. I think
we really needed a win. We ha
ven’t played up to par lately, and
things just haven’t been going
our way. We have a lot of poten
tial, but we just can’t seem to be
consistent, mostly because of in
experience.
