FORT WORTH — The Fed
eral Aviation Administration
told a federal j udge that “a chao
tic situation” would result if the
FAA was forced to assign to
Pacific Southwest Airlines land
ing slots formerly used by de
funct Braniff International.
FAA attorneys Wednesday
said court-ordered reassign
ment of the slots would result in
“a disruption of interstate air
transportation for several
months” and inconvenience
thousands of travelers.
U.S. District Court Judge
Eldon Mahon held a hearing
Thursday to determine whether
to accept a bankruptcy court’s
ruling on an agreement between
Braniff and PSA.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge John
Flowers approved a Braniff-
PSA agreement Monday and di
rected the FAA to provide the
slots needed for a new PSA divi
sion to begin operations at Dal-
las-Fort Worth Regional Air
port.
Under the deal between the
two airlines, PSA would use 30
Braniff jets and the airline’s faci
lities, gates, and landing slots at
DFW airport, which would be
the hub of PSA’s Texas division.
PSA would also hire between
1,500 and 2,000 former Braniff
employees for the new division.
PSA officials said the deal
with Braniff must be approved
in time for them to begin opera
tions May I, so the airline can
take advantage of the lucrative
summer travel season. A delay
in its startup date would kill the
deal, PSA officials said.
In its appeal of Flowers’ deci
sion to Mahon, the FAA said no
new slots — or airport landing
times — could be made available
at the DFW airport by PSA’s
proposed start-up date.
The FAA’s lawyers argued
that airlines now using Braniff s
former landing slots would have
to suspend flights, and that
some airlines would be forced to
stop serving the DFW airport.
Justice Department lawyers,
representing the FAA, said they
would take their appeal to the
appellate courts, if necessary, to
stop Flowers’order to the FAA to
return the slots to Braniff which
would pass them on to PSA.
Braniff creditors, unions and
other airlines also filed objec
tions to Flowers’ ruling with
Mahon.

But Army ROTC can help — two
ways!
First, you can apply for an Army
ROTC scholarship. It covers tuition,

scholarship recipient,
ROTC can still help
