chargin of Watts. The rest of the
Brass tried to get him to stand
and be recognized, but he would
only raise his trombone in an
embarassed salute.
That set the pattern for the
rest of the night. Brillant rendi-
tions of classic and near-classic
music, spaced by a mixture of
history and fun. Much of the
humor was understated, coming
from the facial expressions and
silent interplay of the Brass, but
that made it all the more funny.
Then, after the intermission,
the humor became more ob
vious. In a very abridged version
of the opera “Carmen” and Ros
sini’s “The Barber of Seville”,
some of the Brass donned
fright-wigs and Spanish mata
dor hats, and almost brought the
house down. Perhaps, to many
in the audience, “The Barber of
Seville” was more recognizable
as “Neither A Borrower or a
Lender Be”, of Gilligan’s Island
fame. It had about as much dig
nity, but was twice as funny.
The final selection scheduled
was Bach’s (the audience added
the ssssssss) “Fugue in G minor
( The Little).” The Brass then
took their bows and left the
stage. But the audience wanted
more. Following a long (sitting)
ovation, the Brass returned.
And maryhed into what they cal
led “The Saints’ Halleluia” — a
combination of “The Saints Go
Marching In” -and “Handel’s
Halleluia Chorus.“A
Then the house did come
down.
This time, the Canadian Brass
left the stage to a standing ova
tion. But didn’t return. Much to
everyone’s disappointment.
Thousands put
their fingers on it.
