I l Loveland, a railroad pioneer from early American history. In 1947, Loveland's Postmas ter Elmer Ivers and Chamber of Commerce President Ted W. Thompson realized that Love land had the unique opportun ity to share a little love with the people of the United States and the world; Loveland's Valentine Remailing Program is the result. Over the years, many ideas have been used to give unique ness to the program. The first idea was to select a young boy from Loveland each year to be the Cowboy Cupid. This idea was used from 1951 to 1961. A new innovation developed in 1962 when a Miss Loveland Valentine w'as chosen to repre sent the program and spread the Valentine story. What does the Loveland Valentine Remailing Program have to do with you? The most attractive and wide ly known aspect of the program is the four-line Valentine verse that is placed on each Valentine letter or card mailed to Love land. The poetic creator of this verse is Ted Thompson, founder of the program. The verse, called by Thomp son the Crimson Cachet, is changed every year. The verse that will be added to all letters using the remailing program in 1983 is: Our Cupid is a heart throb, In every place and time. But today he's extra special. Since he's in your Valentine. The verse is usually framed in a background of the Rocky Mountains and often shows a young Cowboy cupid. Valentine letters within the United States are postmarked and sent out on Feb. 9 or 10, depending on the distance to be travelled. Overseas letters are generally sent out earlier. The Valentine letters should be addressed in the manner they are to be delivered, including correct zip code and proper postage. They then should be placed in an outside envelope adressed to Postmaster, Love land, Co. 80537 — Attn. Valen tines. All letters sent to Love land should arrive by Feb. 7, if possible, to insure a Valentine's Day return. After the valentines arrive in Loveland, the Crimson Cachet is applied to each valentine by a group of elderly retired citizens, who work in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce. Many of the retirees have dedi cated their services for 20 years or more, diligently applying the postmark by hand. Another special ingredient to the sucess of the program is Loveland's postmaster and his staff, who have proven to be ideal Cupid's Flelpers. As a re sult of their cooperation, the huge volume of Valentine mail is handled quickly and carefully so it will arrive on schedule. So you see, it's simple to add that little something extra to your Valentine's Day greetings — they don't call Loveland the Sweetheart Town for nothing!
