Faulty spacesuit studied

SPACE CENTER, Houston
— The space agency has slapped
the hands of contractors for
spacesuit failures that blocked
the first space shuttle spacewalk,
but it has not hit them in the
pocketbook yet.
A government investigative
team Tuesday issued a report
soft-spokenly but formally
blaming avoidable mistakes by
contractors for the failures
Nov. 15, the fifth day of the fifth
mission of space shuttle Col
umbia.
The question of money
penalties was still pending for
the contractors — United Tech
nologies Hamilton Standard Di
vision of Connecticut and its
subcontractors, Carleton Con
trols Corp. of New York and
F.W. Bell Inc. of Florida.
