by Jeff Millar & Bill Hinds
Watson
(continued from page 11)
And playing catch-up with A&M
is like the tortoise chasing the
rabbit. They are just so much
quicker than us.”
Texas forward Bill Wend-
landt agreed:
“Their fast breaks killed us.
They had a lot of one on no-
bodys on their breaks. Those are
kind of hard to defend.”
Another factor, Wendlandt
said, was the rejuvenated play of
Texas A&M forward Claude
Riley.
“He’s just so fluid. That’s
what makes him so good,” he
said. “It’s almost like he’s effort
less. You don’t hear from him
for a long time and then bam —
he’s making a big play.”
Wendlandt led the Horns in
the scoring department with 15
points against the Aggies, but
the player that kept Texas close
in the second half was sopho
more Carlton Cooper. Cooper
grabbed a career-high 17 re
bounds and netted 13 points for
the Longhorns.
Weltlich was happy with
Cooper’s performance, but said
Cooper can’t win games by him
self.
“Cooper’s coming along,” he
Said, “but it’s hard for him be
cause he’s only 6-4 and he’s play
ing the post. He’s in there
reaching at 6-4 and they’rev.
(Aggies) reaching at 6-11. Even ^
though he can jump he’s at a,
disadvantage. We’re just not a
team that can go up ovef^
people.”

||“A lot of defenses are keying
■Claude (Riley),” Naulls said
the game, “and Reggie
f .rr Roberts) has been doing a great
ob m picking up the slack, but 1
— think he should have to do
tby himself . I’m going to try to
——*elp out a little more on offense
-try to play a little more agres-
ively on offense.”

Texas play, except on tele-
Jimmie Gilbert blocked
five UT shots for A&M
vision,” Metcalf said. “I was real
ly impressed with them. They’re
real agressive, and I think their
patience upset us.
“I’ve always felt that when
A&M and Texas get together,
it’s not just another contest.
There’s a lot at stake there.”
Naulls said the Aggies also
have a lot at stake in the upcom
ing weeks, when they begin and
end the second half of South
west Conference play.
“It’s time to pull ourselves
up,” Naulls said. “It’s now or
never if we want to get into the
(SWC) tournament. And we
have to do well the rest of the
season if we want to get out of
town, as Coach Metcalf calls it.”
As long as out of town means
Austin, the Aggies will do just
fine.
The Texas A&M men’s swim
ming team defeated both Texas
Tech and Northeast Lousiana
State in Lubbock over the
weekend, running their record
to 7-3 for the season and warm
ing up for their big meet against
the University of Texas on
Friday.
The Aggies beat Texas Tech
76-37 and Northeast Lousiana
State by a score of 98-15. Rick
Walker won two events for
Texas A&M, setting pool re
cords in both the 1,000-yard
freestyle and the 500-yard frees
tyle. Walker also placed second
in the 200-yard individual med
ley for the Aggies.
Texas A&M had six other
first place finishes, including
both the 400-yard medley relay
team’s and the 400-yard frees
tyle relay team’s victories.
The women, however, lost to
Texas Tech by a score of 85-64,
which dropped their record to
4-3 on the season. They were led,
by freshman Vicki Moir, who
placed first in two events, the
100-yard backstroke and the
200-yard backstroke.
Jody Tanner, Edyln Bell and.;*
Melanie Schmauch were the-;
other first place winners for the*'
women.
