OFFICIAL NOTICE
GENERAL HOUSING
STATEMENT
The Housing Office has spaces
available for men and women in
on-campus housing for the Spring
1983 semester. These vacancies
are available due to an unusually
high number of last minute cancel
lations and no-shows. The Hous
ing Office has attempted to call
many students on the waiting list
to offer them a space but most of
them are already committed to a
lease. The breaking of any lease
or the abandonment of a room
mate is strictly discouraged, but
for those students who are living
in temporary quarters, at home, or
without a lease, please be aware
of the few available spaces on
campus. The available spaces for
both men and women are spread
among all the halls on campus. If
interested contact the Housing Of

SALT LAKE CITY — About
one in every 20 patients under
going heart transplant or artifi
cial heart implant operations
will develop seizures within a
week of their surgery, to a Uni
versity of Utah medical expert
said Tuesday.
University doctors thought
their post-operative treatment
of artificial heart patient Barney
Clark may have caused his sei
zures on the fifth day following
the Dec. 2 implant operation of
the world’s first permanent
manrmade heart.
But, Dr. Chase Peterson, uni
versity vice president for health
services, says the general and
localized seizures Clark suffered
Dec. 7 are apparently a relatively
common risk all implant pa
tients face.
“We were worried at first that
it could be a stroke or hemor
rhage or clots from the heart or
something due to his recovery
from kidney failure and all the
metabolic things that were going
on during that period of insta
bility (following the implant
operation),” Peterson said.
But Peterson said, “We’ve
ruled out the hemorrhage, and
we’ve ruled out the clots.
However, we are still left with
the possibility of the unstable
metabolic condition.”
In an effort to improve the
flow of blood to Clark’s lungs,
kidneys and other major organs,
Utah doctors set the man-made
heart to give Clark the blood
pressure of a 20-year-old.
They also hoped the im
proved circulation would flush
wastes from his body and reduce
the buildup of fluids in his legs
and feet. But the loss of fluids
also drastically changed Clark’s
body chemistry, especially his
potassium levels.
However, Peterson said Dr.
William DeVries, who per
formed the implant operation,
“in discussing this case with
three heart transplant centers
around the country, has learned
from them that about 5 percent
