Despite its success, the space
shuttle is confined to low Earth
orbits. So NASA is now consier-
ing plans for an Oribtal Trans
fer Vehicle or OTV. These
“space tugs” would boost
payloads from the shuttle into
higher orbits and then return
for reloading and servicing.
NASA’s present high-orbit
workhorse is called the Inertial
Upper Stage (IUS). But it can be
used only once. To replace it,
Boeing has designed an unman
ned OTV that in its reusable
form could lift more than 3 tons.
It would double its payload and
save fuel by aerobraking, or us
ing atmospheric drag to deceler
ate into a lower orbit. A gas-
filled “ballute” or balloon para
chute will graze the Earth’s up
per atmosphere •

mandment.

CORPUS CHRISTI — An
Army bomb squad, alerted to a
package ticking at a post office,
detonated the suspicious object
in a driveway, and then disco
vered it was a harmless Pac Man
game.
“It was making a ticking
sound,” Lt. Tom Knottek, head
of the bomb squad at the Corpus
Christi Army Depot, said, “It
sounded like a clock.”
X-rays of the battery-
operated Pac Man game, in a
package addressed to a Corpus
Christi resident, showed the
package contained wires and
electronic gadgetry, police said.
The package was taken to the
post office driveway where it was
blown up by the Army bomb
squad.
The post office intends to
reimburse the person who was
to receive the game.

CLAREMONT, Calif. — De
spite an unemployment rate of
over 10 percent, and Depress-
ion-style “tent cities” springing
up across America, CARE is
pulling in more money than last
year to aid the needy overseas,
the organization’s executives
say.
The relief organization oper
ated in 38 foreign countries with
a $350 million budget last year,
but one CARE official said in an
interview that addressing
domestic needs will become a
topic of growing public concern.
“It’s going to be more of an
issue,” said Mike Robitialle, dire
ctor of CARE’s Pacific South
west Division.
“It’s more of an issue now
than it was a year ago,” he said.
“It’s not an issue for CARE, but
for the American people it will
be an issue. People will say there
is hunger in the United States
too.”
Americans donate the bulk of
CARE’s resources, and despite a
severe recession and unemploy
ment at its highest level since the
Great Depression, they have in
creased their contributions.
“For the First six months of
this fiscal year, we’re running
four percent above last year,”
Assistant Executive Director
Ron Burkard said.
“It is a demonstration of the
concern Americans have for
people in other parts of the
world. It may be bad here, but
they think, ‘What must it be like
in Bangladesh?”’
