Now you know United Press International SAN DIEGO — The man chil dren know as Dr. Seuss says he will never appear again before a group of youngsters because of an encounter he had in Cleve land with a rough bunch of teenagers. “I was drawing characters on an easel before some of the toughest 13-year-old kids I’ve ever seen,” said Ted Geisel, the JPs refuse interracial marriages United Press International AUSTIN — The director of the Texas Civil Liberties Union said today he’s satisfied that Attorney General Jim Mattox will decide whether three Fort Worth area justices of the peace must perform interracial mar riages. TCLU director John B. Dun can had asked the state Commis sion on Judicial Conduct to re move the three Tarrant JPs from office after they said ear lier this month they would not perform interracial marriages. Commission director Maurice S. Pipkin has asked Mattox’s office for an advisory opinion on the matter because the eight-member panel has never addressed the issue. Pipkin said it will be discussed at a March meeting of the com mission. Ray Bell, president of the NAACP in Fort Worth, has also written Mattox to protest the ac tions of the three JPs, John Forbes, Eldon Sheffield and Sandy Pringle. Duncan said he was not upset that the Commission on J udicial Conduct referred the matter to Mattox’s office, even though he said the commission has the power to remove the JPs. “Clearly, we’d be happier if they (commission) went about doing what they ought to do,” he said. “But I’m not disturbed ab out the issue going to Attorney General Mattox. “His record on civil rights has been very good.” said Duncan. “I think the law is on our side and it’s just a matter of time be fore an (attorney general’s) opinion tells them (commission) they should take some action.” Duncan said the TCLU would not object if the JPs refused to perform any marriages, but he said it becomes a constitutional question if they refuse on the basis of race, sex, religion or na tional origin. “Then they run into problems with the civil rights law,” he said. “It seems fairly clear that’s what they’ve done.’’ J Pipkin said thee referred to Mattox's] cause it has never a* fore. “The commit, does not endorser kind,” he said. “Sina] i e'M .i i c 11 liasnotsatj how we should resell lem, we have askediW general lor an opia] whether a justice i under the circun quired to periornu riages.” DIETING?
