Arrival brings demonstrations

HOUSTON — About 50 de
monstrators greeted the arrival
of Pakistan President Moham
mad Zia ul-Haq outside a Hous
ton hotel Saturday by chanting,
waving placards and calling for
the restoration of human rights
in the strife-torn country.
Zia, arriving in Texas for a
two-day visit which will include a
stop at the Johnson Space Cen
ter, waved at the group as he
drove past and continued to the
hotel entrance about 50 yards
from the streetside demonstra
tion.

not the people” and “Down with
Zia,” the group chanted: “We

People’s Party and former
minister of railways under the
regime of the late Prime Minis
ter Aulfikar Ali Bhutto, said the
demonstration was aimed at the
lack of human rights in Pakistan.
“It is disappointing that a
great country like yours would
support the worst dictator of the
times — Zia,” Hussain said.
“Pakistani people who oppose
Zia’s government are flogged
and jailed.”
He said the American public
should ask the Reagan Adminis
tration to demand restoration of
human rights in Pakistan and in
sist that aid to the country be tied
to improving the situation.
“When there’s martial law in
Poland, you’re very much flared
up and show a lot of concern.
W’hen there’s martial law in
Pakistan, you are supporting the
dictator,” Hussain said.
Zia, who was greeted at the
airport by Houston Mayor
Kathy Whitmire and various
civic and business leaders made
no remarks upon arrival. He was
whisked to a waiting police
escourt and entourage of 16
limousines before departing for
his hotel.
