The Oilers latest loss was 17- 14 to the New York Giants Sun day — a game in which Camp bell rushed 23 times for 66 yards. Under Phillips, Campbell car ried as many as 39 times in a game behind offensive line per sonnel obtained to block for his straight-ahead running. Biles, the defensive coordina tor who replaced Phillips in 1981, Monday called that style of play “18th Century.” “The game is changing to where teams use backs for situa tions,” Biles said. He used the Cowboys as an example of a team which substituted many running backs successfully. “The day of one back carrying 30 times a game is almost non- existant,” he said. He made his comments to re porters at his regular weekly news conference. Asked if his philosophy made obsolete the talents of one of the toughest and most durable run ners in NFL history, he said, “No, no, no. “He’s involved in a different role and he accepts it. And also, when one player doesn’t do well on a hole, you’ve got to be able to have his partner back him up. That’s exactly what Paul and Danny did — they just teamed real well.” The Aggie coach also said he and his players are pleased to reach their preseason goal. “We really wanted to play the regular tournaments better, be cause last year, we played well at conference and at the national tournament, but we didn’t play well during the regular season,” Ellis said. “We knew we were capable of winning every tour nament we played in this semes- ITS Texas ASM University CAMP FISH CHAIRMAN,SU&CH AIRMAN RECCOORDINATOR Applications Open: Nov. 29 Close: Dec. 10 v, xjf 216 MSC the trends. Every one’s excited about the spring, but we have to be ready for some tough competition. I told the fel lows to enjoy the holidays, but to really keep in contact with the game, because it’s going to be a tough spring. “We’re going to have to work very hard. We have the talent to be very, very competitive in the spring, but we have a very tough conference, too.” In the tournament, Texas finished fourth at 210, TCU was ninth at 212, Arkansas was 15th at 217 and Rice and Baylor tied for 16th at 219. During the spring, the Longhorns wound up sixth in the nation and the UCLA Bruins were seventh. In the same tournament, the Aggie women’s golf team finished 10th. Shirley Furlong and Pat Gonzales carded scores of 70, 77 and 69 in the three-day event. We’re looking for a few good college students and graduates who can fill the shoes of a Marine Corps Officer. That’s a pretty tall order. Because it means leading other Marines. Being a leader of the finest. Being responsible for their safety and welfare. Being in charge. That’s something no civilian job can offer you at 26. It’s something very few people can ever measure up to. For those few who do meet our standards and have the drive to be a Marine Officer, we offer tuition assistance in the NROTC, Platoon Leaders Class (PLC), even a chance to join the Marine Reserve while you’re still in college. If you think you’re cut from the right mold, drop by your college placement center and set up an appointment with your Marine Corps Officer Selection Officer.
