-time skier
Part-time secretary is full
United Press International
NEW YORK — Spring, sum
mer and fall, MaryJoBerscheitis
a prim legal secretary. Come
November, she quits to go
skiing — all winter long.
"It took a lot of courage when
I first quit my job — all that
security, good retirement prog
ram," she said.. "But I'd been
thinking about just going skiing
for a whole winter for six years.
And then, when once I quit it,
well. I've been quitting jobs
once a year now for 12 years.
She often returns to the same
law firm and "When I quit, they
say, 'When are you coming
back?' I say, 'I'll call you.' When
I call they say, 'When are you
coming back to work?'
It works out very well, she
says, because most legal secre
taries want to take their vaca
tions in the summer and she be
comes a replacement for them.
"I feel like I've been on a vaca
tion for 12 years."
It has settled into a simple
routine. She owns a condomi
nium in Aspen which she rents
while in New York, and shares
an apartment in Manhattan with
a roommate who looks after it
while she's skiing. "I can travel
between the two with two small
suitcases.
"My ski clothes are out there
on the hangar all ready to go.
My ski equipment is in the lock
er in the basement."
She's written a book about her
love affair with skiing, "Joy on
the Mountain" (Pitkin Press,
Aspen, Colo.). No howto-ski
book this, it's a peon to the
thrills and glories of skiing.
"I wanted to tell people who
might never get on skis just how
wonderful it is," she said.
Of her first day at Snowmass
in Aspen, she writes, "Darting
and swooping where I would, I
skimmed downward. Plumes of
snow, the white wings of my
feet, shot upward and outward
from my skis. Feathery soft
spray rose up and tickled my
face. Joy, like a fountain bubbled
up within me."
But skiing every day all winter
long, does it never become
boring?
"No. Well, yes, it might, I
confess, if I didn't have my
teaching. I love teaching with a
passion — sharing the successes
of my students.
"Sometimes I think, when
there's great powder, I'd like to
take a whole day off for free
skiing. But if I did. I'd probably
find somebody on the mountain
who needed help and give them
a hand."
In all. Miss Bercheit has been
skiing 22 years — and teaching
20 of them. She began with bus
trips to mountains close to New
York and quickly became an in-
Duunur. Six years later she
threw over her job and took off
for a winter of skiing at Aspen.
She has been teaching there
each winter since.
She does have a few tips for
the would-be beginner.
—Don't go out and buy new
equipment before you start.
Rent it until you know the kind
of equipment you need and
whether you are going to stay
with skiing.
—First three days skiing, at
least, take lessons. Don't just try
to ski without them.
—Do tell your instructor how
you feel. Some beginners are
fearful, others gung ho for any
thing. This way, the instructor
will be able to help you more.
