Old homes decked out for tours
by MaryAnnSwick
Battalion Reporter
"Christmas in Olde Bryan," a
tour of historic Bryan homes will
be held Saturday from 6p.m. to
9 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m.
to 5 p.m.
The third annual tour will fea
ture four Bryan homes on the
west side of town and, for the
first time, a synagogue.
The Swift-Darby home, lo
cated at 109 Sterling, is a turn-of-
the-century Victorian home that
has had its framework altered
several times and is currently
being restored and converted
into two apartments.
The Astin-Shipman home, lo
cated at 506 W. 26th, was built in
1918 by Nina Heard and Roger
B. Astin. It is now owned by Dr.
Nolan Shipman. This house has
a fireplace in every room and
wood carvings that complement
the house's interior. The
grounds have a carriage house
and a children's playhouse.
The Oliver-Presnal house, lo
cated at 602 W. 26th, was built
around 1904. The current own
ers are Dr. & Mrs. Henry L. Pre-
snal. The exterior of the home
features double-story columns
and wrap-around porches. Ori
ginal and leaded glass perme
ates the house and the many de
corative mantelpieces of varying
styles and woods are an added
interest to the interior of the
home.
The Chance home, at 102 S.
Parker, was build in 1911 and is
currently owned by Mr. & Mrs.
Charles Harty. The grounds of
the Chance house include a car
riage house and servants quar
ters. A unique highlight to the
interior of the home is the
French wallpaper in the living
room which was ordered from
Paris when the home was built.
Temple Freda is located at 205
S. Parker. The synagogue, built
in 1912, was the first structure
built by the Jewish settlers when
they came to this community.
All of the furnishings of the
synagogue are original and the
stained glass windows are of
particular interest.
The Embroiderers Guild will
sponsor a Christmas Bazarr
which will be set up in the Swift-
Darby home and The Commun
ity Singers will be caroling
throughout the tour.
Tickets are $5 per person and
are available at local banks, at
both Bryan and College Station
Chamber of Commerce offices,
and may also be purchased in
the homes on the days of the
tours, which are sponsored by
Citizens for Historic Preserva
tion.

Before you start thinking that
Texas A&M University has so
many traditions that it can't
handle any more, think again.
The Twelve Men of Aggie-
land has come to campus. But
don't confuse it with the tradi
tion of the Twelfth Man. The
Twelfth Man features
thousands of Texas A&M stu
dents. The Twelve Men of
Aggieland, however, is a calen
dar featuring 12 male students.
Each month on the 1983
calendar features one Aggie
male and sets him in a surround
ing that depicts his personality.
For example. Brad Lund, the
December model, stands in
front of an airplane. May model
Paul Anglin is clad in jogging
togs.
The models come from
around the nation. Seven males
are from Texas, the others are
from Virginia, Delaware and
California.
The calendar was produced
by Westar Productions, which is
made up of. several Texas A&M
students. A spokesperson for
the business said the students
discovered their models by
walking around campus during
the summer and asking "prom
ising" males to model. The field
of 20 potential models was nar
rowed to the 12 pictured in the
calendar.
Westar plans to make the
Twelve Men of Aggieland a tra
dition, and produce it again next
year. The calendar can be purch
ased at the MSC Bookstore for
$2.95.
