Female guard
found stabbed
United Press International
GALVESTON — Police set
up road blocks to monitor traffic
from Pelican Island to Galveston
Tuesday in their search for an
18-year-old suspect in the mur
der of a female security guard,
investigators say.
Galveston Police Sgt. J. Rice
said Barbara Jean Whiteley, 57,
an employee of Delphi Guard
Service, Inc., was found dead
about 2 a.m. Tuesday at a Shell
Oil terminal on Pelican Island.
He said the woman was
almost decapitated from a
t hroat slashing and her body was
stabbed numerous times.
Whiteley had phoned police
dispatchers earlier Monday
night to report a minor accident
which involved a rental truck.
Investigators found a blood
stained wrecked rental truck
several miles from the scene of
the killing and immediately be
gan a search for the driver.
“It’s our belief that the per
son that had charge of this truck
was at her location because the
license number of the truck was
written down on her pad,” Rice
said.
“There was blood on the in
side of the truck, but we don’t
know if it was her blood.”
Investigators theorized the
driver of the truck initially fied
the scene of the accident and la
ter returned and killed the
security guard.
Whiteley’s body was disco
vered near the security shack
where she checked license plate
numbers of cars going into the
complex. She was in uniform
and unarmed.

Man sues University Park
police over choke-hold use
United Press International
DALLAS — A man who
claims a University Park police
man broke his jaw, shattered
several teeth and nearly caused
his tongue to be severed by using
a choke hold, has filed a $7 mil
lion lawsuit against the officer
and the suburban Dallas police
department.
The civil suit, filed in federal
court by James V. Margiotta, 28,
claims officer L.C. Schoolcraft
used the hold after stopping
Margiotta for speeding Oct. 28
near Southern Methodist Llni-
versity.
Margiotta’s attorney, Paul F.
Cafnes, said the officer “got
angry” when Marigotta
approached the patrol car to dis
pute the reading. Schoolcraft
applied the hold when Margiot
ta instinctively moved his right
arm, Carnes said.
The choke hold involves
grabbing a person around the
neck from behind, cutting the
flow of blood to the brain
oxygen to the lungs to fora:
victim unconcious.
The suit, filed
claims Margiotta regained
ciousness about a half hour:
and found himself “lying
ground in a pool of blood
his hands handcuffed belli
his back.”
